Hawks take fight to Howard, win ESPNU showdown
PRINCESSE ANNE, Md. — University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) jumped all over Howard, taking an early 13-2 lead on Monday, and then running away with an 85-67 victory in front of a large home crowd and a national television audience.
Senior co-captain Devin Martin finished with 21 points on 6-of-12 shooting and hit 5-of-6 from the line.
It was a big night for Dominique Elliott and Bakari Copeland as well. Elliott finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Copeland poured in 21 points. Freshman Ahmad Frost chipped in eight points and five assists.
Copeland, a JUCO transfer, had seen his consecutive double digit scoring streak end with a few tough games, but turned it around against the Bison (10-12, 4-3 MEAC).
Seven Hawks played double-digit minutes, and all 14 players saw the floor. UMES won the rebounding battle 37-31, turned the ball over just eight times.
The Hawks will remain home for a matchup with Hampton on Saturday at 4 p.m., and then host Norfolk on Monday (Feb. 8) at 7:30 p.m.

Strong Second Half Keys Hornets Past Cheyney
DOVER, Del.—Delaware State led by two points at the break, but won the second half 42-28 to hold off Division II Cheyney 86-70 in a men’s basketball contest in Memorial Hall this evening.
Sophomore forward Artem Tavakalyan came off the bench to lead four Hornets in double-figures with career-highs of 19 points and nine rebounds. Tavakalyan was 8-for-15 from the field and perfect on three free-throws. He also contributed three assists and two steals to the win. Tavakalyan posted career-highs in points and rebounds for the second straight game.
Devin Morgan added 12 points and a game-high six assists, while DeVaughn Mallory and Todd Hughes tallied 11 points each for DSU. Hughes also had a career-high five blocks in the game, a high for the Hornets this season.
The Hornets will return to MEAC play this weekend with a two-game Florida road swing. The trip begins at Bethune-Cookman Saturday at 4 p.m. and wraps-up at Florida A&M on Monday (Feb. 8) at 7:30 p.m.

Cold Shooting Early Leads FAMU To 81-63 Loss To NCCU
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—The FAMU Men’s Basketball team dropped their third straight game Monday night, falling behind early and never recovering in an 81-63 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference setback to North Carolina Central at The Al Lawson Center.
FAMU (6-15, 2-6 MEAC) fell behind quickly in the early going, shooting just over 20-percent from the floor, while NCCU would bolt out of the gate shooting right at 50-percent to forge a double-digit lead midway through the first half.
FAMU had four players score in double figures, led by Isaiah Omoregie with 16 points and five rebounds. Malcolm Bernard added 15 points, six rebounds and three assists, while K’Ja Johnson finished with 12 points and a pair of 3-pointers, followed by Craig Bowman, who had 11 points and a pair of triples.
NCCU (6-17, 3-6 MEAC) got a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds from Dante Holmes, followed by 17 points from Patrick Cole, 11 points from Jeremiah Ingram and 10 points from C.J. Wiggins.
FAMU will be off until next Monday, Feb. 8, when they host Delaware State at 8:00 p.m. in The Al Lawson Center.
NCCU will rest up to host North Carolina A&T on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 4:00 p.m. inside McDougald-McLendon Arena.
