South Carolina State sophomore Desire Waller was named 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Year, the conference announced on Wednesday.

University of Maryland Eastern Shore's Saitaua Iosia earned Rookie of the Year honors while Lady Hawks head coach Don Metil was named Coach of the Year. All honors were voted on by the MEAC head volleyball coaches and sports information directors.

Waller led the conference with 48 services aces in 108 sets this season. She ranks fifth in conference in kills per set (3.71) and hitting percentage (0.252). The outside hitter aided the defending MEAC champion Lady Bulldogs to a 17-15 overall record and 8-2 mark in MEAC play. Waller concluded the regular season totaling 334 kills, 213 digs and 69 blocks.

Iosia recorded 39 service aces, 239 digs, and 49 blocks during her rookie campaign. She ranked fourth in the conference in several categories including kills per set, aces per set and hitting percentage. Iosia posted a MEAC season-high 30 kills vs. Bryant and earned conference's weekly honors 10 times this season.  The outside hitter was named Player of the Week by American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) on November 8, a first for the conference.

Under the tutelage of Metil, the Lady Hawks have tallied five consecutive 20-win seasons and won the northern division each year. This season, Metil guided his team to their fourth undefeated mark in MEAC play with a 12-0 record. UMES concluded the regular season with a 21-6 overall record, including 16 match win streak.  As a team, the Lady Hawks led the MEAC in kills, assists and blocks.

Joining Waller and Iosia on the 2011 All-MEAC First Team is South Carolina State's Shabree Roberson. Bethune-Cookman's Krysta Gardner, Maryland Eastern Shore's Jessica Vivic, and Florida A&M's Karol Marquez round out the first-team honorees.

The MEAC Volleyball Championship tournament begins on Friday, November 18 at 10 a.m. The competition continues on Saturday with the semi-final matches scheduled at noon and 3:30 p.m.

The volleyball championship tournament will conclude on Sunday beginning at noon and will be video-streamed live, for free, on MEACsports.com.
