Washington's Double-Double Not Enough For Lady Hornets

Dover, Del. (Feb. 1, 2010) ---  Senior center Brittany Washington picked up her fourth double-double on the season, but it wasn't enough to overcome the visiting Howard Bison as Delaware State fell 48-44 on Monday evening at Memorial Hall in Dover, Del.

Washington's outstanding second half of nine points and nine rebounds gave her totals of 11 points and 12 rebounds on the contest, but it wasn't enough to overcome DSU's struggles from the field.  For the game the Hornets shot 15-62 from the floor for a MEAC season low 24.2%.

In a back and forth first half that saw no team take more than a six point advantage, six different Hornets (3-18, 1-7 MEAC) got on the board for DSU, but Howard managed to take a 19-16 lead into intermission.  The red and blue was able to force 11 Bison turnovers, using five steals to pad the possession advantage while having only six miscues themselves..

In the second half DSU would cut the lead to one at 31-30 following four straight points from junior guard Cortney Crockett.  But a 7-0 run by the Bison (10-10, 6-3 MEAC) would see them extend an advantage they would never relinquish.  Washington would manage two straight old-fashioned three point plays to keep DSU within striking distance at 43-37, and a Selena Galloway three-ball would make a game of it at 45-42 with 33 seconds remaining.  But with the advantage at 46-44, Howard's Kara Smith would ice it with two free throws to make it a two possession game with just seven seconds remaining.

Crockett finished with 10 points as well as two assists and two steals.  Zykia Brown would lead all scorers for Howard with 12 points, including 8-9 from the charity stripe.
