Bethune-Cookman Advances With 10-4 Win Over Coppin State
Bethune-Cookman defeated Coppin State 10-4, in the second game of the 2012 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Championship tournament Thursday morning at the Marty L. Miller Field.
The game which was halted in the top of the seventh yesterday resumed with the Wildcats up 8-4.
Bethune-Cookman's Josh Johnson scored on a David Lee RBI to take the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning yesterday.
The Wildcats pushed the lead in the second. Jordan Taylor scored with an RBI while Carlos Delgado's sacrifice bunt and a Josh Johnson RBI pushed the lead to 4-0.
Coppin State got on the board in the top of the third and tied the game at 4-all. Yahya Muhammad hit a single to right field that scored John Walls. Myles Taylor scored on a B-CU throwing error and Muhammad crossed the plate off a hit by Zach Hawk to centerfield. Wright added to the runs for CSU off a RBI single by Alex Brown.
The Wildcats extended their lead once again in the bottom of the third with a RBI by Alejandro Sanchez, another RBI by Johnson and a two run double to left field. The Wildcats ended the inning with an 8-4 cushion.
With play resumed in the seventh, Bethune-Cookman scored two runs for the 10-4 final.
Scott Garner (4-4) allowed seven hits and four runs (three earned) in 5.0 innings to earn the win. Ali Simpson pitched 3.0 innings, striking out seven to earn the save.
Madison Neddo (0-12) took the loss allowing six hits and eight runs (eight earned) in 6.0 innings. Michael Roberts pitched 2.0 innings in relief with three hits and two runs.
UMES USES SIX RUN INNING TO MOVE PAST NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL, 13-5
Maryland Eastern Shore scored six runs in the sixth inning en route to a 13-5 win over the North Carolina Central Eagles in the third game of the 2012 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Championship tournament Thursday morning.
Maryland Eastern Shore (13-37) will meet the winner of Delaware State/Savannah State tomorrow in winner's portion of the bracket.
North Carolina Central falls to 18-31 and will meet the loser of Delaware State/Savannah State game in the elimination bracket this evening.
The two teams were tied two all heading into the bottom of the fifth. North Carolina Central scored three runs in the fifth to take the 5-2 lead. Luiz Diaz opened up the scoring margin after crossing the plate on a wild pitch. Troy Marrow scored off a groundout by Michael Romano and Carter Williamson added the final score of the frame.
UMES battled back in the top of the sixth with six runs off of six hits to take a 8-5 lead. The Hawks extended the scoring margin with two runs in the eighth and three in the ninth for the 13-5 final.
Johnson was 3-for-5 with two RBI to lead the Hawks. Bryon Campbell totaled three RBI and was 2-for-5 from the plate.
North Carolina Central had five players account for their five hits in the contest.
Jacob Foreman improved to 6-5 after allowing five hits and five runs (three earned) in 5.1 innings.
Glenn Frye (4-6) took the loss with 10 hits, eight runs (three earned) and nine strikeouts.
Delaware State Outlasts Savannah State, 10-8
Delaware State outlasted Savannah State 10-8 in the four game of the 2012 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Championship Tournament on Thursday afternoon at the Marty L. Miller field.
The Hornets (36-15-1) advances in the winner's bracket and will face Maryland Eastern Shore tomorrow immediately following the Bethune-Cookman/Norfolk State matchup.
Savannah State (19-33) falls to the elimination portion of the bracket and will face North Carolina Central this evening.
Tony Gatto led the way for the Hornets with three hits, while MEAC Player of the Year Ryan Haas and JP Frey each notched two hits a piece.
As a team, Savannah State tallied eight runs. Matthew Oglesby was two-for-five with three RBI for the Tigers.
Jordan Elliot (10-2) pitched 6.1 innings with seven strikeouts and two walks to earn the win for DSU.
Kyle McGowin (6-5) allowed 10 hits and 10 runs (eight earned) in 5.1 innings.
North Carolina A&T Eliminates Coppin State With 14-3 Win in MEAC Tourney
NORFOLK, Va., May 17, 2012 - Kelvin Freeman drove in three runs and Andre McKoy and Bo McMillian each totaled two runs batted in to lead North Carolina A&T to a 14-3 victory over Coppin State in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Championship tournament on Thursday at Marty L. Miller Field.
Freeman was 3-for-for with four RBI to lead North Carolina A&T, while four other Aggies each had two hits.
Alex Brown was 2-for-2 with two RBI to lead Coppin State, Jesse Savage went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Shane Carter (2-3) earned the win with five hits, one run (one earned) and five strikeouts.
Paul Hawk (0-11) took the loss allowing nine hits, 10 runs (eight earned) in 1.2 innings.
North Carolina A&T (19-35) will face the loser of tomorrow's Bethune-Cookman/Norfolk State game.
Coppin State ends their season at 1-53.

With the win, NCCU (19-31) moves on to Friday night's elimination game against the loser of the Delaware State/Maryland Eastern Shore matchup.
As a team, the Eagles recorded a game-high 14 hits and 10 RBI. Troy Marrow went 3-for-5 with a triple, a double, and three RBI for NCCU.
Darien Campbell was 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Tigers.
Michael Romano (3-3) pitched 8.0 innings and captured the win for the Eagles.
Shawn Gallagher (2-3) took the loss for the Tigers allowing four hits and four runs (four earned).
Savannah State concluded its season with a 19-34 mark.
