Hampton and FAMU grab top spots for 2013 Volleyball Tournament

NORFOLK, Va., November 12, 2013 – The Hampton University Lady Pirates and the Florida A&M University Lady Rattlers earned the top seeds in the northern and southern divisions of the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Championship tournament.

The Lady Pirates finished the season with a 10-2 mark in conference play en route to the MEAC northern divisional title. Hampton won eight of its last 10, including the final three matches, to seal the title.

Coppin State, advancing to the tournament for the second consecutive season, won the tiebreaker over Howard (8-4) to secure the second seed in the north. Norfolk State (7-5) earned the fourth and final spot by winning its final two conference matches.

Florida A&M also captured its seventh straight southern divisional crown with an unblemished 10-0 mark in conference play. The Lady Rattlers boast eight of the last 11 MEAC volleyball regular season titles and 13 overall.

North Carolina A&T (6-4) finished as the second seed in the southern division. Bethune-Cookman (5-5) won the tiebreaker over South Carolina State (5-5) to wrap up the third and fourth seeds.

Only the top four teams in each division are eligible to compete in the single match elimination tournament and vie for the championship title. Seedings are determined by overall conference records. Morgan State (7-5), Maryland Eastern Shore (2-10), Delaware State (0-12), North Carolina Central (3-7) and Savannah State (1-9) have been eliminated from tournament play based on their MEAC record.

The 2013 MEAC Volleyball Championship tournament begins on Friday, November 15 at 10 a.m., at the Physical Education Complex on the campus of Coppin State University in Baltimore, Md. Admission for the championship tournament is $7 each day and $15 for three-day passes. General Parking will be $5 in Lot H.
