Aggies Blank Hawks in MEAC Baseball Opener
SALISBURY, Md., May 17, 2017 – North Carolina A&T State defeated Maryland Eastern Shore, making its return to the MEAC Baseball Championship after a year hiatus, 8-0 on Wednesday afternoon in the tournament opener at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
The Aggies, the Southern Division No. 2 seed, scored twice in the second to take an early 2-0 lead. In the next inning, the Aggies' Timothy Ravare delivered a RBI-single up the middle to extend the margin, 3-0.
North Carolina A&T State will take on Norfolk State, the Northern Division's top seed, on Thursday at 3:30 p.m
In the bottom of the fourth, North Carolina A&T State capitalized on the Hawks' miscues and ballooned its advantage to 5-0. North Carolina A&T State's Milton Rivera drilled a shot down the leftfield line to score two more in the fifth, 7-0.
Kyle Clary added an insurance run in the sixth to give the Aggies an 8-0 lead.
In the eighth, Maryland Eastern Shore had an opportunity to cut into the deficit after loading the bases, but the Aggies ended the rally with a 4-6-3 double play.
For the Aggies (27-23), they registered eight runs on 11 hits. Rivera led the Aggies' attack with three RBIs in the win. On the mound, Kaeson Wilson struck out eight and scattered four hits in seven innings of work.
Maryland Eastern Shore (12-39), the No. 3 seed out of the Northern Division, awaits the loser between No. 2 Delaware State and No. 3 Florida A&M at approximately 7 p.m. in an elimination game.
Offensively, MDES scattered five hits and stranded nine runners overall. Senior Jordan Wesley recorded a multi-hit game, going 2-of-4 with a stolen base.
