MEAC Football Recap: Week 9

Aggies Fall to Wildcats
North Carolina A&T 13, Bethune-Cookman 31
Aggie Stadium - Greensboro, NC

Greensboro - Bethune Cookman amassed 357 yards of total offense and controlled the time of possession, as the Wildcats spoiled North Carolina A&T's homecoming and Senior Day with a 31-13 victory Saturday.

Bethune's sophomore quarterback Maurice Francois ran for 73 yards and a touchdown and threw for another 85 yards, helping his team keep the ball for over 37 minutes in the game.

After the Wildcats' Keith Courtney scored from 5-yards out, the Aggies' lone bright spot came on Quay Long's 96-yard punt return for a touchdown to tie the game at 7-7 going into halftime. Long's return was a school record.

In the second half, however, Bethune scored 24 unanswered points, the last touchdown coming on a Ryan Lewis 28-yard interception of North Carolina A&T quarterback Carlton Fears to seal the game.

The Wildcats defense held the Aggies to 198 yards of total offense.

Bulldogs Power Past Hornets
South Carolina State 52, Delaware State 10
Bulldog Stadium - Orangeburg, SC

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (October 31, 2009) --- Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference leader South Carolina State racked up more than 500 total yards in a 52-10 win over Delaware State before 21,257 delighted homecoming fans at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs won their fourth straight game to improve to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the MEAC. SC State has won 16 straight league games since the 2007 season. The defending MEAC champions were ranked 10th in the latest SportsNetwork and AFCA Coaches polls of Top 25 Football Championship Subdivision teams entering the contest.

The Hornets fell to 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the MEAC.

The 42-point margin was the Bulldogs' largest over the Hornets since a 52-6 victory in 1979.

South Carolina State scored on its first five possessions of the game, including touchdown passes of 24 and 80 yards by Long to Young, rushing touchdowns of 13 yards by Will Ford and two yards by Long and a 37-yard field goal by Blake Erickson. The Bulldogs scored four touchdowns in the first quarter and one in the second.

DSU got on the board with a 90-yard kick return for a touchdown by Larrone Moore with 2:02 left in the first quarter. The kick return was the fourth longest in school history and was the longest of the junior wide receiver's DSU career. The kickoff return for a touchdown was the first by a Hornet since Brandon Hudson vs. North Carolina A&T in 2007.

The Bulldogs led 31-7 at the half.

Hampton Slips Past WSSU in Overtime
Hampton 16, Winston-Salem State 13
Bowman Gray Stadium - Winston-Salem, NC

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Hampton Pirates erased a 10-point deficit in the final 5:23 of the fourth quarter and used a Steve Robinson 11-yard touchdown run in overtime to steal a 16-13 overtime victory away from the Rams in Winston-Salem State University's Homecoming on Saturday afternoon at Bowman Gray Stadium.

The Rams jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the 5:05 mark of the first quarter as running back Cedrick Hickman muscled his way into the end zone from three yards out to give the Rams the early advantage.

Hickman's touchdown is all that the stingy Rams' defense would need in the game's first 30 minutes of play as they held the Pirates to only 88 yards of total offense en route to a seven point halftime lead, only their second lead of the season at intermission.

Winston-Salem State increased their lead to 10 points with just over two minutes to play in the third quarter as Landen Thayer's 33-yard field goal gave the Rams a 10-0 lead with only 17:35 to play in the game.

Spartans Cruise to Homecoming Win over Howard
Norfolk State 41, Howard 6
Dick Price Stadium - Norfolk, Va.

NORFOLK, Va. - Chris Bell caught four passes for 138 yards and a pair of long touchdowns, and the Norfolk State offense rolled up a season-high 520 yards of offense in a 41-6 homecoming win over Howard on Saturday afternoon at Dick Price Stadium.

Howard (2-6, 0-5 MEAC) scored the game's first points on a 30-yard pass from Floyd Haigler to Willie Carter with 4:40 left in the first quarter. But the stout NSU defense did not allow anything else, while the Spartans (4-4, 3-3) scored the final 41 points of the contest to register their first homecoming win since beating Howard in 2005.

Haigler's TD throw to Carter capped a 12-play, 87-yard drive. But Bell caught TD passes of 51 and 64 yards from quarterback Dennis Brown (Miami, Fla.) on the Spartans' next two possessions. Justin Castellat (Virginia Beach, Va.) connected on 2-of-3 field goals in the second quarter, covering 27 and 31 yards, to send NSU into the half with a 20-6 lead.

The NSU defense dominated the second half, allowing Howard just 36 yards in the final two quarters. The Spartan offense wore down the Bison defense, holding the ball for nearly 20 minutes in the second half behind a bruising running game. Brown scored the only touchdown of the third quarter on a 2-yard run, which capped a seven-play drive.

Bears fall by inches in overtime to Florida A&M
Florida A&M 31, Morgan State 28
Hughes Stadium - Baltimore, Md.

BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Morgan State Bears can't seem to catch a break at the opportune time. The Florida A&M Rattlers stopped Morgan State quarterback Carlton Jackson on fourth and inches at the 15 in overtime of a 31-28 victory at Hughes Stadium on Halloween evening.

The Rattlers started off the scoring rather quickly as 1:50 into the game, Curtis Pulley threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Elliott to give Florida A&M a 7-0 lead.

The Rattlers then fired some more. This time, with Philip Sylvester running the football into the end zone from 19 yards out to help extend the Florida A&M advantage to 14-0 with 6:43 left in the first quarter.

Florida A&M (6-2, 4-1 MEAC) could've made it 21-0 when the Rattlers' Gregory Boler nearly picked off a Jackson pass and would have ran it into the end zone. However, the drive was kept alive and Jackson ended up throwing a 27-yard touchdown pass with Edward Morton-Green with 2:18 left in the first quarter to cut the deficit to 14-7.

In the second quarter, Morgan State (5-3, 3-2 MEAC) tied the game at 14 on a Domanick West 2 yard touchdown scamper with 14:03 left.

Morgan State hardly had answers for Florida A&M quarterback Curtis Pulley as he found the end zone on a six yard run with 10:12 remaining in the third quarter. Pulley ran 20 times for 231 yards and two touchdowns in the game.
