Former SC State Standout to Play in Arena Bowl XXIV Tonight
Former South Carolina State standout Terrance Smith, who played on both sides of the football for the Bulldogs during his career (2006-09), will play in the Arena Football League's biggest contest Friday (Aug. 12) night when his Jacksonville Sharks (16-4) take on the Arizona Rattlers (18-2) in Arena Bowl XXIV at 8:30 p.m. from Phoenix, Arizona. The game will be broadcast on the NFL Network.
The Sharks advanced to the title game by beating the No. 3 seeded Georgia Force 64-55 on Monday to win the American Conference Championship.
Smith, who will be wearing #10, the same number he wore as a Bulldog, is listed on the Sharks roster as a wide receiver/defensive back, but has played mostly at cornerback for Jacksonville, after being signed as a rookie last September. In 17 games, the Aiken, SC native has recorded 51 tackles, 29 assists and six interceptions, three of which he returned for touchdowns.
As a wide receiver, the position he played three years for Coach Buddy Pough, Smith caught 68 passes for 874 yards and nine touchdowns. As a senior in 2009, he had his best season, catching 40 passes for 542 yards and four scores.
He played defensive back as junior in 2008 and had 26 tackles, 15 unassisted. He also had four interceptions and two fumble recoveries, one of which he returned 41 yards for a touchdown in a 28-21 win over Florida A&M.
