Coppin State deputy athletic director Alecia Shields-Gadson was recently named chair of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee during its annual meeting in Indianapolis.

Shields-Gadson, who has served on the committee for the past three years, was named the chair during the annual meeting in June in Indianapolis and will serve in the position for the 2012-13 academic year.

" I am very excited to continue to champion the cause of diversity and inclusion," said Shields-Gadson. "And to assist the NCAA through my committee service with its efforts at insuring that all student-athletes will have memorable experiences during their athletic tenures."

The committee, which serves Division I, II and III, was formed in January 1991 to review issues related to interests of ethnic minorities and women. These issues focus on the education and welfare of minority student-athletes, as well as the enhancement of opportunities for ethnic minorities and women in coaching, athletic administration, officiating and NCAA governance structure.

"Our membership is truly global as we have student-athletes that represent a wide array of countries, ethnicities, cultures and experiences," Shields-Gadson said. "This committee has been charged with insuring inclusion at all levels, and I look forward to keeping the relevant issues at the forefront of intercollegiate athletics"

Shields-Gadson also serves on the NCAA Woman of the Year Committee and was a past chair of the NCAA Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee.
