Riddick Named to Jerry Rice Award Watch List
NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk State redshirt freshman running back Brendon Riddick has been named to the initial watch list for the Jerry Rice Award, given annually to the top freshman in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision by The Sports Network.
Despite being limited last week by an ankle injury, Riddick is 10th in the MEAC in rushing with 279 yards through the Spartans' first five games. Riddick, who splits time with senior Takeem Hedgeman in the Spartan backfield, also has a team-high six touchdowns, five rushing and one receiving. His six touchdowns are tied for the second-most among MEAC players. Earlier this year, Riddick was named The Sports Network's FCS National Freshman of the Week following his 150-yard, three-touchdown performance in the win at Liberty on Sept. 8.
Riddick is the only MEAC player on the initial watch list for the Jerry Rice Award, named for the former Mississippi Valley State and San Francisco 49ers star receiver. The current list consists of 16 players but will expand to 20 by the end of the regular season. A nationwide panel of sports information and media professionals will vote on the winner, which will be announced at the FCS national awards banquet on Dec. 17 in Philadelphia.
