NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – Quarterback Brodrick Waters finished 4-of-6 for 65 yards and one passing touchdown on Saturday afternoon, accounting for one of the day’s three scores, in the third annual Bethune-Cookman Football Spring Showcase at the New Smyrna Beach Sports Complex. Admission was just $1 with all proceeds from the gate and concession stands going to support the New Smyrna Beach Pop Warner League.

The game was non-traditional as it consisted of four 10-minute quarters, as well as an eight-minute span in the beginning that focused seven-on-seven drills and special teams. During the game, there were no field goal situations or punting. The offenses took the field at the 20-yard line for each possession.

Waters, a senior from Sarasota, Fla., connected on his first two passes of the game, including a 40-yard strike to junior receiver Preston Cleckley. That set up the first score of the game, a 20-yard touchdown pass from Waters to Tyree Green. The extra point was connected on by Sven Hurd, advancing the offense to a 7-0 advantage. The scoring drive spanned 80 yards across six plays.

For his first offensive series, sophomore quarterback Quentin Williams went three-and-out, but bounced back in his next series as he connected on passes to Jhomo Gordon (three yards) and Drexler Dixon (six yards) out of the backfield. Williams finished the day 5-for-12 with 29 yards through the air and rushing for eight yards.

The defensive unit, anchored by senior Jarkevis Fields and Nick Addison, was able to pressure Williams on multiple occasions, including sacks by Fields and Nesly Marcellon. Angel Lolicero, a linebacker for the Cats, was able to register two solo stops, including a tackle in the backfield.

Waters continued his offensive output in the second quarter with a short pass to Cleckley. Fellow quarterback Jackie Wilson took over in the second half for short runs of four and seven yards, respectively. That allowed Dixon to break away from the defense with a 23-yard touchdown run for the game’s second score. Hurd added the extra point.

In the second half, it was Wilson connecting on a one-yard touchdown strike to tight end Justin Henderson, accounting for the game’s final score.

The defense got into the action late with a few three-and-out stops, as well as a key interception inside the five yard line by Tyrie Simmons, returning it 56 yards to the offensive 32 yard line.

Wilson finished the game 5-of-8 passing for 59 yards and a touchdown, including an interception. Meanwhile, Waters added 19 yards on eight carries.

Dixon finished with 57 yards on nine carries and 23 yards receiving from his running back position.

After the game, head coach Brian Jenkins handed out the end-of-spring awards to the team prior to meeting with fans and signing autographs and taking photos.

The awards given out were as follows: Keystone Award (Jarkevis Fields), Willie “Foots” Lee Warrior Award (LeBrandon Richardson); Playmaker Award (Jordan Murphy); Wildcat Award (Rashard Brown); Iron Cat – offense (Alex Monroe); Iron Cat – defense (Tevin Toney); Most Improved – offense (Brian Dorsey); Most Improved – defense (Tim Burke).
