MEAC Completes Day One of Track and Field Championships
The Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks and the defending MEAC champion Norfolk State Spartans took the lead after day one's competition of the MEAC Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.
On the women's side, the Lady Hawks tallied 21 points to take the lead heading into day two action. The Hampton Lady Pirates were second with 20 points while Morgan State followed in third with 16 points.
Maryland Eastern Shore freshman Petra Kubesova, the 2013 MEAC Indoor Outstanding Runner, continued her dominance in distance running by breaking the outdoor record in the 5000m with a time of 17:05.04. She replaces former UMES runner Merrecia James who set the record in 2007 with a time of 17:41.41.
Hampton senior Shantae Boney took the lead after the first day of heptathlon competition. Boney finished with 3,070 points with first place finishes in the high jump (1.70m) and the 200m dash (24.73). Coppin State’s Alexis Easterling (3,070) and Ashley Bacote (2,771) finished second and third.
Coppin State’s Deandre Daniel captured the first gold medal of the day with a 1.72m leap in the women's high jump. Hampton's Breana Norman and N.C. A&T’s Nakita Gray earned silver and bronze places respectively.
Bethune-Cookman junior Keron Stoute tallied 3,618 points during the first half of the decathlon. Hampton's Emmanuel Price was second with 3,494 points and B-CU’s Martin Embry was third with 3,440 points.
Florida A&M’s Elias Chesire finished first in the 5000m with a time of 14:51.84. Norfolk State’s Natnael Meseret, Damtew Adnew, and Sammy Kiptoo finished second, third and fourth to amass 19 points and secure the Spartans first place finish after day one.
The Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships continue tomorrow with the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon at 9 a.m. Other field events on Friday's slate include the men's and women's long jump, high jump and shot put. The afternoon continues with semifinals in the women's 100m hurdles and men's 110m hurdles, 400m dash, 100m dash and 800m run. The women's and men's 5000m will close out the day beginning at 5:30 p.m.
The competition concludes Saturday at 9 a.m. with field events including: men's and women's pole vault, javelin, and triple jump. The women's and men's 4x100m relays will begin the running finals at 1 p.m. Rounding out the evening's events will be the men's and women's 4x400m relay race at 4:20 p.m.
