MEAC Announces Volleyball Weekly Honors

NORFOLK, Va., September 16, 2013 – Hampton University junior Vendula Strakova was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) volleyball Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Howard’s Katherine Broussard earned Rookie of the Week honors.

Strakova (RS, 6-0, Jr., Brno, Czech Republic) posted three double-doubles of kills and digs at the Eagle Challenge. In the three matches, Strakova recorded 60 kills and 55 digs. She finished with 27 kills and 23 digs as the Lady Pirates came close to handed West Virginia its first loss of the season.

Broussard (OH, 5-11, Fr., Harvey, La.) had two double-doubles in kills and digs against Saint Francis (Pa.) and NJIT. She registered 43 kills and 39 digs in four matches to aid the Lady Bison to 4-0 last week.

Other Top Performers: 

Ginna Lopez-Chavez (FAMU)
tallied 53 kills, 14 blocks and seven digs as the Lady Ratters finished 2-2 last week.

Victoria Ferguson (SCSU) averaged 12.3 digs in three matches and picked up a season-high 13 digs against The Citadel.

Alex Irizarry (NSU) registered 18 digs, three aces and two assists in three matches at the Spartan Classic.

Petra Jerabkova (UMES) was named to the Spartan Classic All-Tournament Team after registering 44 assists, 18 kills and 17 digs.

Jessica Johnson (NSU) was selected to the Spartan Classic All-Tournament Team after totaling 25 kills in three matches.

Allyson Lods (HOW) finished with 38 digs and was named Co-MVP of the UMBC Maddie Bingaman Tournament.

Haley McClure (MSU) totaled eight kills, five digs and two assists in a win against Lehigh.

Cindy Okpegbue (CSU) totaled 38 kills (3.45 avg.) and earned All-Maddie Bingaman Tournament Team honors.

Delicia Pierre (B-CU) finished with a career-high 21 kills against UNC-Charlotte.

Samantha Prescott (MSU) recorded a double-double of 12 kills and 20 digs against Lehigh.

Kalin Russell (NCCU) totaled 33 kills and earned Elon Phoenix Classic All-Tournament Team honors.

Alex Thomas (B-CU) finished with 90 assists and 22 digs in three matches at the Spartan Classic.

Desire Waller (SCSU) recorded a double-double of 11 kills and 15 digs in a match at The Citadel Invitational.
