Augusta Wins 2017 MEAC Men's Golf Championship
SAVANNAH, Ga., April 28, 2017—Augusta University won its third straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men's Golf Championship on Friday at Crosswinds Golf Club, finishing the three-day event with a score of 821 (277-277-267).
The Jaguars earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Div. I Men's Golf Championships. The NCAA Div. I Men's Golf Selection Show will air on Thursday, May 4 at 12 p.m. on Golf Channel.
Emmanuel Kountakis, who was the 36-hole leader, took home the individual title after shooting a 6-under 66 on Friday to finish at 15-under par. He shot in the 60s in all three rounds.
The Jaguars nearly swept the All-Tournament Team, occupying the top four spots on the individual leaderboard. Broc Everett, the 18-hole leader, wound up second overall at 12-under following Friday's 66, while Jake Marriott was third at 9-under.
Gustav Andersson fired a 4-under 68 to finish at 7-under par in fourth place.
Bethune-Cookman's Christian Hovstadius wrapped up the top five – and the All-Tournament Team – coming in fifth at 5-under after Friday's 2-under 70.
Kountakis was named the tournament's Outstanding Performer, while Jack O'Keefe was named the Outstanding Coach.
Behind Augusta, the Wildcats finished second in the team standings with an 857 (292-285-280), while Savannah State was third at a 32-over 896 (300-306-290) and North Carolina Central (298-307-301=906) was fourth.
Hampton (302-310-305=917), Florida A&M (314-304-305=923) and Maryland Eastern Shore (331-326-313=970) rounded out the seven-team field.
