Florida A&M Draws Florida In NCAA Division I Softball Championship Opener
Florida A&M will head to Gainesville, Fla. for the start of the 2017 NCAA Division I Softball Regionals Friday afternoon against a familiar foe in top-seeded University of Florida. This marks the fourth time in FAMU postseason history that the Lady Rattlers will head to Pressly Stadium in Gainesville.
The Lady Rattlers clinched their fourth consecutive MEAC Softball Championship and the MEAC's automatic bid after defeating longtime rival Bethune-Cookman twice in the final of the 2017 MEAC Softball Championship Sunday afternoon in Ormond Beach, Fla. Florida A&M will make its 11th NCAA Postseason appearance and eighth NCAA Regional appearance since 1999. All appearances have been under head coach Veronica Wiggins.
FAMU is very familiar with Florida as they've played two contests against the Gators this season in Gainesville with the last contest occurring on May 7. The Gators are 16-0 all-time against the Lady Rattlers. FAMU is joined in the regional by Florida International of Conference USA and Oklahoma State of the Big 12. FAMU faced FIU twice this past season and is 0-1 all-time versus Oklahoma State.
Friday's contest begins at 2:30 p.m. EST as the contest follows the Oklahoma State/Florida International contest at noon. The double elimination regional resumes on Saturday, May 20 and concludes on Sunday, May 21. The winner of the regional will square off against the winner of the Alabama Regional on May 26.
