Hornets Exact Revenge, Eliminate FAMU
SALISBURY, Md., May 18, 2017—Delaware State exacted revenge Thursday evening at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium, eliminating Florida A&M with a 7-4 win on the second day of the 2017 MEAC Baseball Championship.
The Rattlers had defeated Delaware State via run rule on Wednesday.
The Hornets (22-24) advance to take on North Carolina A&T State on Friday in an elimination game at 12 p.m.
The Rattlers picked up a run in the top of the first; after Dallas Oliver walked and advanced to third on a Garrett Wilkinson single, he later scored when Aubrey McCarty reached on a fielder's choice. But FAMU's lead was shortlived, as Delaware State answered in the bottom of the frame by tying the game at 1-1 on a Ciaran Devenney sac fly.
Kodi Russ cranked a solo blast to left field in the top of the second, giving the Rattlers a 2-1 lead.
But the Hornets battled back, pushing across five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-2 lead. Evan Regez got the scoring started with an RBI single to tie the game, before Kwestin Smith singled to right field to bring home Regez and Tommy Jordan.
Devenney then singled off the first base bag to bring in Smith and put the Hornets up 5-2 before Jaylen Zielecki then added an RBI single of his own.
All five runs in the inning came with two outs.
Regez added an RBI single in the fifth to give the Hornets a 7-2 lead.
But the Rattlers (27-26) got two back in the top of the seventh, as McCarty singled home a pair of runs to cut the lead to 7-4 and chase freshman starter Garrett Lawson, who struck out a career-high nine in 6.2 innings of work.
Travis Dill came in and worked 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, before Darien Ragins came in to pick up his MEAC-best 11th save of the season.
Four Hornets had two hits each, while Regez, Devenney and Smith each drove in a pair of runs.
