DOVER, Del., June 28, 2017 -- The 2016-17 Delaware State bowling team has earned national recognition for its work in the classroom.

The National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) has released its annual list of teams with “exemplary” grade-point averages for the 2016-17 academic year.  To be considered for team recognition, programs must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or higher. Delaware State was 10th among the 32 programs that reached the standard with a team GPA of 3.471.

In addition, seven Hornets are among 229 student-athletes earning NTCA All-Academic recognition by maintaining at least a 3.4 GPA for the 2016-17 school year.

Delaware State's NTCA All-Academic bowlers are junior Elizabeth Burkholder (Lancaster, Pa.), freshman Samantha DeLong (Middleburg, Pa.), senior Amoni Knight (Dover, Del.), sophomore Olivia Laird (Middletown, Del.), junior Amber MacLeod (Brick, N.J.), freshman Ashley Merritt (Grove City, Pa.) and freshman Alexis Neuer (Lewisburg, Pa.).

First-year head coach Kayla Stamm led the Hornets to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division title, while Neuer was named MEAC Co-Rookie of the Year and competed for the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) national singles championship during the 2016-17 season.
