MEAC Announces Weekly Volleyball Honors
NORFOLK, Va., Sept. 25, 2017—Hampton junior Reeana Richardson was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Florida A&M’s Candelaria Herrera was named Rookie of the Week, while Hampton freshman Maja Petronijevic earned Defensive Specialist of the Week honors and Bethune-Cookman senior Phalen Clark was named Setter of the Week.
Richardson (5-10, Jr., OH, Ellicott City, Md.) was named MVP of the MEAC North-South Challenge after leading Hampton to three wins this past weekend. She hit .308 for the week, including a season-best 18 kills on .556 hitting in a three-set win over Savannah State. Richardson added 12 kills and two blocks in a four-set win over North Carolina A&T State, and she also had 10 kills, hitting .286, in a straight-set win over South Carolina State.
Herrera (6-1, Fr., MB, San Juan, Argentina) was key in Florida A&M’s home win over North Florida this past Tuesday, racking up 13 kills (on a .455 hitting percentage) to go along with four total blocks, three service aces and three digs. In fact, Herrera clinched the match with an ace on match point, giving the Rattlers the five-set victory.
Petronijevic (5-6, Fr., DS, Belgrade, Serbia) averaged 4.2 digs per set for the Lady Pirates in the MEAC North-South Challenge, and she recorded a season-best 16 digs against North Carolina A&T State. She had double-digit digs in all three matches – including 14 against Savannah State and 12 against South Carolina State. Petronijevic also had three aces against Savannah State.
Clark (5-10, Sr., S, Baton Rouge, La.) averaged 11.0 assists per set in a pair of matches this past weekend, racking up 56 in a five-set match against Florida Atlantic – a match in which she also had 16 digs (for her third double-double of the season) and four total blocks. Earlier in the week against Florida Gulf Coast, Clark had 32 assists, five digs, a block and a service ace.
Other Top Performers
Alana Handy (B-CU) recorded two double-doubles this past weekend, racking up 12 kills and 10 digs against Florida Gulf Coast and 17 kills and 17 digs against Florida Atlantic.
Jordan Jefferson (B-CU) notched two more double-doubles this weekend against Florida Gulf Coast (10 kills, 12 digs) and Florida Atlantic (14 kills, 10 digs).
Rechez Lindsay (B-CU) had 20 digs in a five-set loss to Florida Atlantic.
Dominique Madarang (CSU) averaged 6.3 assists per set for the week, including 24 against Hartford.
Glorines Rosado (CSU) had 11 digs against Hartford after racking up nine at UMass Lowell.
Asia Stennis (CSU) had 11 kills, six digs and three blocks against Hartford.
Valentina Carrasco (FAMU) had 15 digs in a win over North Florida.
Elena Dimitrova (FAMU) racked up 42 assists against North Florida, while adding six digs, six kills and two blocks.
Maria Yvette Garcia (FAMU) had 15 kills, 11 digs and four aces in a five-set win over North Florida.
Victoria Jenifer (HAM) hit .316 for the weekend in the MEAC North-South Challenge, including seven kills and a .667 hitting percentage against Savannah State.
Lena Reed-Petracek (HAM) averaged 5.2 assists per set, racking up 18 each against South Carolina State and North Carolina A&T State.
Tamia Dockery (HOW) had 31 assists and 12 digs in a three-set loss at UMBC.
Khaila Donaldson (HOW) recorded a double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs against UMBC.
Carolina Machado (MDES) averaged 9.7 assists per set in six sets played, racking up 29 assists each in wins over Savannah State and South Carolina State.
Sola Okesanjo (MDES) had six total blocks in a straight-set win over South Carolina State.
Iva Vujosevic (MDES) had two double-doubles on the week: 12 kills and 12 digs at George Washington and 16 kills and 11 digs against North Carolina A&T State.
Edie Brewer (NCAT) had 29 assists, four aces and nine digs against Maryland Eastern Shore and averaged 5.6 assists per set for the week.
Samara Brown (NCAT) had 12 kills and 11 digs in a five-set win over Maryland Eastern Shore.
Courtney Pitt (NCAT) had 11 kills and six digs against Maryland Eastern Shore.
Camille Uadiale (NCAT) had seven total blocks against Norfolk State and 14 for the weekend.
Melvina Brown (NSU) racked up 19 digs against South Carolina State after recording 17 in a win over Savannah State.
Taylor Eichelberger (NSU) had 15 kills against South Carolina State.
Clarke Tyler (NSU) had 14 kills against South Carolina State after racking up 10, to go along with four blocks and three aces, in a three-set win over Savannah State.
Salma Gonzalez (SSU) had 15 assists, 11 digs and seven kills against Norfolk State in the MEAC North-South Challenge.
