MEAC Announces Weekly Women's Basketball Honors

NORFOLK, Va., Nov. 14, 2017Hampton senior Monnazjea Finney-Smith was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Howard’s Curstyn Moore earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Bethune-Cookman junior Ashanti Hunt was named Defensive Player of the Week.

Finney-Smith (G/F, 6-1, Sr., Portsmouth, Va.) scored a career-high 25 points on a career-best seven 3-pointers in Hampton’s season-opening 70-66 win at North Carolina on Friday. Two of those 3-pointers came on back-to-back possessions during a 9-0 run that gave the Lady Pirates the lead with five minutes remaining. She also had five steals and three rebounds against the Tar Heels.

Moore (G, 5-10, Fr., Mount Vernon, N.Y.) went 7-for-11 from the floor in her collegiate debut against William & Mary on Saturday, scoring 20 points and grabbing six rebounds. She also had a block and a steal.

Hunt (F, 6-1, Jr., Washington, D.C.) grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds, blocked three shots and had three steals in Bethune-Cookman’s 77-59 win at FIU on Monday. She also had two blocks, five rebounds and a steal in the team’s season-opening win against Edward Waters.

Other Top Performers
Angel Gordon (B-CU) dropped 28 points on 10-for-14 shooting against Edward Waters before adding nine points and two blocks in a win at FIU.

Amaya Scott (B-CU) scored 11 points against Edward Waters.

Camille Downs (CSU) scored eight points in her collegiate debut at Baylor.

Chance Graham (CSU) opened the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds at Baylor.

Genesis Lucas (CSU) scored 25 points at Baylor.

Ryan Jones (DSU) had 10 points, four assists and four steals at Temple.

NaJai Pollard (DSU) scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds at Temple.

Florence Ouattara (FAMU) scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds at Eastern Michigan.

Zhymani Smith (FAMU) had eight points and three assists at Eastern Michigan.

Jephany Brown (HAM) had 16 points, eight rebounds and four steals at North Carolina.

Sarah Edmond (HOW) scored 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had three assists against William & Mary.

Braennan Farrar (MSU) averaged 18.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists per game as Morgan State opened the season with loss at Syracuse and a win over Cheyney.

Lexus Spears (MSU) had nine rebounds at Syracuse and four steals against Cheyney.

C’Coriea Foy (NCAT) averaged 15.5 points per game as the Aggies went 1-1 in the season’s opening weekend.

Khadedra Croker (NSU) grabbed five rebounds and had seven blocks in Norfolk State’s season-opening win at VCU.

Armani Franklin (NSU) scored 10 points and had four steals at VCU.

Alexys Long (NSU) dropped 17 points on 5-for-7 shooting from 3-point range at VCU.

Heniaya Moton (SSU) averaged 9.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game as the Lady Tigers opened the season 1-1.

Donsaja Scott (SSU) had 19 points and 16 rebounds in the team’s season-opening win over LaGrange College.
