MEAC Announces Weekly Baseball Honors

Norfolk State redshirt senior Brian Beard was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Delaware State’s Ciaran Devenney earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Norfolk State senior Devin Hemmerich was named Pitcher of the Week.

Beard (5-11, 200, r-Sr., Chesapeake, Va.) batted .733 (11-for-15) in helping the Spartans to a 4-0 week, which included a win over William & Mary and a three-game sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore. He had five RBIs and five runs scored for the week, and Beard had multiple hits in all four games – including a 4-for-4 effort in the second game against MDES. He also had four stolen bases on the week, including three against William & Mary. Beard slugged 1.13 and had a .750 on-base percentage for the week.

Devenney (5-11, 205, Fr., Manalapan, N.J.) batted .375 (6-for-16) in four games this past week, and he had two RBIs in helping the Hornets take two out of three games against Coppin State. He was 3-for-6 at the plate in the second game of that series with an RBI and three runs scored, and he also stole a base in that contest. Defensively, Devenney had 36 putouts, three assists and just one error.

Hemmerich (6-1, 190, Sr., Norfolk, Va.) broke Norfolk State’s career strikeout record with 12 punchouts in an 8-2 win over Maryland Eastern Shore. He went seven shutout innings in the win, scattering four hits and only walking two batters in winning his sixth straight decision. Hemmerich reached double-digit strikeouts for the fifth time this season, and the fourth time in his last five starts.

gave up just one earned run in 7.1 innings of work in a win over Florida A&M.

Adonis Lao (B-CU) extended his hitting streak to 22 games, batting .412 for the week and picking up a pair of RBIs in a three-game series against Florida A&M.

Nazier McIlwain (CSU) scored four times and drove in three runs this past week, and went 4-for-4 in the second game against Delaware State.

Krystian Negron (CSU) struck out four in five shutout innings against Delaware State.

Ryan Anderson (FAMU) went 7.0 innings in a win over Bethune-Cookman, scattering six hits and striking out five.

Octavien Moyer (FAMU) batted .500 and had a .700 slugging percentage in a three-game series against Bethune-Cookman.

Garrett Wilkinson (FAMU) went 2-for-4 in a 10-9 win over Bethune-Cookman, driving in five runs in completing the comeback.

Kyle Clary (NCAT) drove in six runs in four games – including five in a three-game sweep of North Carolina Central.

Noah Dyals (NCAT) threw a combined 1.2 innings of shutout relief, picking up a win and a save.

Corey Joyce (NCCU) had three RBIs in the series opener against North Carolina A&T State, going 2-for-3 with a triple.

Jake Raby (NCCU) had two multi-hit games against North Carolina A&T State, including a 4-for-4 effort with two doubles in the series finale.
