MEAC Completes Day One of 2017 Tennis Championship

NORFOLK, Va., April 20, 2017—All four top seeds advanced on Thursday during the quarterfinals round of the 2017 MEAC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on the campus of Old Dominion University.

The South Carolina State women backed up their top seed Thursday morning with a 4-0 win over Howard in the quarterfinal round. They advanced to Friday’s semifinal, where they will face North Carolina A&T State – the Southern Division’s No. 3 seed which defeated Norfolk State (the No. 2 seed from the Northern Division) in Thursday’s quarterfinal 4-2.

The Lady Aggies won each of their three singles matches in straight sets, with Khalia Powell, Angelica Martinez and Klara Smolikova earning victories.

Hampton also advanced on the women’s side, defeating Florida A&M 4-0. The top-seeded Lady Pirates will take on Morgan State, the Northern Division’s No. 3 seed, in Friday’s semifinal. Morgan State advanced by outlasting Bethune-Cookman, the No. 2 seed in the Southern Division, 4-3 in a match that lasted well into the afternoon.

The Lady Bears clinched when Danielle Thompson defeated Alejandra Vidal in three sets, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

South Carolina State also boasted a 4-0 win over Howard in the men’s quarterfinals, in another match-up of the top Southern Division seed and the No. 4 seed out of the Northern Division. The Bulldogs advanced to Friday’s semifinal, where they will face Norfolk State, the No. 2 seed out of the Northern Division.

The Spartans overcame losing the doubles point against Southern Division No. 3 seed North Carolina Central, winning four of their five singles matches to clinch a 4-2 victory.

Morgan State, the Northern Division’s top seed on the men’s side, dispatched of North Carolina A&T State, the Southern Division’s No. 4, 4-0 during the afternoon session. The Bears will take on Florida A&M, the Southern Division’s No. 2 seed, in Friday’s semifinals.

The Rattlers lost the doubles point against Northern Division No. 3 seed Hampton, but bounced back to sweep four singles matches to advance.

Semifinal action begins at 9 a.m. on Friday with the women’s matches; men’s semifinals will start at 12 p.m.

Saturday’s championship matches will kick off at 9 a.m. for the women and 12 p.m. for the men.

The championship is free and open to the public.
