FAMU Pulls Away From Delaware State
SALISBURY, Md., May 17, 2017—Florida A&M, the Southern Division's No. 3 seed, scored in five of the seven innings played on Wednesday en ruote to a 12-2 run-rule victory over Delaware State at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on the first day of the 2017 MEAC Baseball Championship.
The Rattlers (27-24) will take on Bethune-Cookman on Thursday at 12 p.m.
FAMU struck first in the top of the first inning on an RBI double from Garrett Wilkinson, before pushing across two more runs in the third when Willis McDaniel cranked a two-run home run over the left field wall to put the Rattlers up 3-0.
Two more runs scored in the fifth, as the Rattlers took advantage of two Delaware State errors to take a 5-0 lead. FAMU followed that in the sixth by pushing across three more runs, the first coming on an RBI single from McDaniel. Aubrey McCarty then walked with the bases loaded to push across another run, before Ben Ellzey did the same thing to give the Rattlers an 8-0 lead.
The Hornets (20-24) struck twice in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the lead to 8-2 after a Jaylen Zielecki sac fly and an RBI single from Tommy Jordan.
But the Rattlers put the game away for good in the top of the seventh, starting with Russ Kodi scoring on an error to make the score 9-2. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, McCarty doubled to left center to bring across all three runs and give FAMU a 12-2 lead.
Dallas Oliver was 5-for-5 at the plate leading off for the Rattlers, while McDaniel was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and McCarty drove in four runs on a 2-for-4 effort.
McCarty also struck out five in 5.2 innings pitched for his sixth win of the season.
Delaware State dropped into the elimination bracket, where the Hornets will face MEAC Northern Division rival Maryland Eastern Shore at 7 p.m.
