SALISBURY, Md., May 17, 2017—Delaware State eliminated MEAC Northern Division rival Maryland Eastern Shore Wednesday evening with a 6-5 win at Arthur W. Purdue Stadium to close out the first day of the 2017 MEAC Baseball Championship.

Delaware State advanced to play again on Thursday at 7 p.m., against the lower-seed team among those who lose the two earlier games that day.

Maryland Eastern Shore ends its season at 12-40.

MDES struck first in the top of the first inning; after Tyler Friis led off the game with a double down the right field line and advanced to third on an error, he scored on a Ryan Rotondo groundout to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

But Delaware State answered in the bottom of the frame, tying the game at 1-1 on an RBI single from Jaylen Zielecki.

The Hornets (21-24) broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth; after Tyler Collins led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Delaware State then loaded the bases – before all three runs came in on a double down the left field line from Evan Regez to take a 4-1 lead.

Darnell Maisonet then doubled home Regez before later scoring himself on an error to give the Hornets a 6-1 lead.

A two-run single from Jordan Wesley in the top of the sixth cut the lead to 6-3. Isaiah Chambers followed later in the inning with an RBI single of his own, cutting the lead to 6-4 before taking two bases on an error and later scoring on a wild pitch to make the score 6-5.

The Hawks threatened again in the top of the ninth, getting runners on first and second with two outs, but MEAC saves leader Darien Ragins closed things out for his 10th save of the season and allowed the Hornets to advance.

Regez was 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs for the Hornets.
