NORFOLK, Va. -- Already Norfolk State's most decorated Division I baseball player, pitcher Devin Hemmerich added to his impressive 2017 awards haul on Saturday when the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) named him to its All-America third team.
The ABCA honor is the first of its kind for a Spartan in the Division I era (since 1998) and is the fourth D-I All-America honor for the left-hander this year. Hemmerich was also named a third-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball News, Perfect Game and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America.
Prior to this season, no Spartan had ever earned recognition on a Division I All-America team encompassing all classifications. Hemmerich is one of three Spartans to earn freshman All-America accolades, which he accomplished in 2014.
Hemmerich, a 26th-round draft choice of the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier this week, won NSU's third consecutive MEAC Pitcher of the Year honor after compiling a 10-2 record, 1.97 ERA and 118 strikeouts as a senior in 2017. He tied or broke three single-season school records and three career marks this year alone.
