NORFOLK, Va., June 19, 2017—The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) has named Khalil Rmidi Kinini from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore as the 2016-17 Male Student-Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced today.

“I would like to congratulate Khalil Rmidi Kinini,” Commissioner Dr. Dennis Thomas said. “He's had an absolutely phenomenal career at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, not only as a student-athlete, but academically and in extracurricular activities as well. I wish him continued success and I would like to thank all of the people who had a positive influence on Khalil.”

Kinini, a native of Malaga, Spain, competed under MEAC and NCAA regulations in three sports: men's cross country, men's indoor track & field and men'soutdoor track & field. He also represented Maryland Eastern Shore and his home country on the national and international stage in cross country and track & field.

He completed his Bachelor's degree in Business Administration-Marketing on May 26, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a 3.5 GPA.

During his time at Maryland Eastern Shore, Kinini received countless awards in all three sports in which he participated. Most notably, he was named the MEAC's Most Outstanding Performer in cross country (2014, 2015, 2016), indoor track & field (2015, 2016, 2017) and outdoor track & field (2015, 2016, 2017).

Additionally, he was named an NCAA Mid-Atlantic Cross Country Regional Men's 10K top 5 finisher in 2016 and NCAA preliminary participant in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 2015, 2016 and 2017 – advancing to the national meet in Eugene, Ore. earlier this month.

He was also named an NCAA Cross Country National participant in 2016.

Kinini worked hard from day to day as a student-athlete to excel both in the classroom and on the track. He was highly regarded by his coaches as one of the most coachable athletes they have ever worked with at Maryland Eastern Shore, raising the cross country/track & field standard at MDES to new heights with his fine showmanship and success in all three sports.

The Male Student-Athlete of the Year honor is awarded to the student-athlete who has excelled academically and athletically and is in his final season of intercollegiate athletic eligibility and competition under MEAC and NCAA regulations for the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated.

Each of the MEAC's 13 member institutions may nominate one male student-athlete for the honor. The honoree is selected by a committee of five conference Athletic Directors that uses a combination of the following criteria in selection of the award: service of leadership, academic achievement and athletics excellence.
