McCorory, Lewis Named to Lower Va. Peninsula Athletic HOF

HAMPTON, Va. – The Athletic Hall of Fame of the Lower Virginia Peninsula announced its 2017 Hall of Fame inductees recently and two former Hampton University track standouts will be enshrined with the upcoming class.

Francena McCorory and Yvette Lewis will join four other area standouts with enshrinement on August 13 at Boo Williams Sportsplex.   Joining them will be Bev Vaughan (first Athletic Director/Men’s Basketball coach at Christopher Newport), Allen Iverson, Lisa Dillard (All-American sprinter at Christopher Newport and Clemson) and Keith Witherspoon (All-American in triple jump at Virginia).

Lewis was a two-time NCAA champion at Hampton, taking the indoor triple jump title in 2006 and outdoor triple jump crown in 2007. She was named an All-American by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) four times: 2006 indoor triple jump, 2006 outdoor triple jump, 2007 indoor long jump and triple jump, and 2007 outdoor triple jump and 100-meter hurdles.

While a Lady Pirate, McCorory won two indoor 400-meter NCAA titles and one outdoor.  Her 2010 NCAA indoor performance set a new collegiate and American record at 50.54.  She also is a two-time Olympic gold medal winner as a part of the 4x400 relay teams in 2012 and 2016.  McCorory was a four-time All-American, as named by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The banquet will be held Sunday, Aug. 13 at 6 p.m. at the Boo Williams Sportsplex, 5 Armistead Pointe Parkway. Tickets are $30 per person and can be purchased by calling 757-727-6348.  Currently 64 members are in the Athletic Hall of Fame of the Lower Virginia Peninsula.
