MEAC Announces Weekly Volleyball Honors
NORFOLK, Va., Nov. 13, 2017—Florida A&M sophomore Nicole Abreu and Hampton junior Reeana Richardson were named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Co-Players of the Week, the conference office announced today. Florida A&M’s Candelaria Herrera was named Rookie of the Week, while Bethune-Cookman sophomore Alana handy earned Defensive Specialist of the Week honors and Bethune-Cookman senior Phalen Clark was named Setter of the Week.
Abreu (6-1, So., OH, Lima Peru) was huge in three wins for Florida A&M this past week, hitting a combined .369 and recording a double-double in each match while averaging 4.3 kills and 4.2 digs per set. In a five-set non-conference win over Alabama State, she had 24 kills and 10 digs, hitting .452. Abreu then had 13 kills and 13 digs in a sweep of North Carolina Central, before recording 11 kills and 23 digs in a straight-set win over North Carolina A&T State. She also had five total blocks for the week.
Richardson (5-10, Jr., OH, Ellicott City, Md.) ended the regular season with a pair of double-doubles in helping Hampton clinch its first MEAC Championship berth since 2014. She racked up 25 kills and 12 digs, hitting .304, in a four-set win over Delaware State, to go along with two total blocks, before turning in a 23-kill, 12-dig, four-block, two-ace performance in a five-set win over Norfolk State.
Herrera (6-1, Fr., MB, San Juan, Argentina) hit .472 in three matches this past week, including a .594 effort – recording 22 kills – in a five-set non-conference win over Alabama State. She then had 10 kills and six total blocks against North Carolina Central, before ending the regular season with seven kills, three total blocks, three aces and five digs against North Carolina A&T State. For the week, Herrera averaged 3.5 kills per set.
Handy (5-10, So., L, Burlington, Wash.) averaged 8.1 digs per set for Bethune-Cookman in a pair of conference wins to wrap up the regular season. After recording 24 digs, the most in school history in a three-set match, in a win over North Carolina A&T State, Handy notched a school-record 33 digs in a four-set win over North Carolina Central.
Clark (5-10, Sr., S, Baton Rouge, La.) averaged 11.1 assists per set for the Wildcats – including 50 against North Carolina Central to go along with eight digs and three total blocks. She also had 28 assists and three total blocks against North Carolina A&T State.
Other Top Performers
Alondra Bautista (B-CU) racked up 21 kills and 10 digs against North Carolina Central, after recording 10 kills and seven digs against North Carolina A&T State.
Valentina Carrasco (FAMU) notched double-digit digs in all three matches for the week, including 18 against South Alabama.
Valeria Lopez (FAMU) had 50 assists against South Alabama and averaged 10.4 assists per set for the week.
Maja Petronijevic (HAM) racked up a season-high 28 digs against Delaware State, before recording 17 digs and two service aces against Norfolk State.
Lena Reed-Petracek (HAM) had 49 assists against Delaware State and 45 against Norfolk State.
Carlise Cardoza (HOW) had 28 digs in a five-set loss to Morgan State.
Khaila Donaldson (HOW) had 23 kills and 16 digs against Morgan State.
Christian Patton (HOW) had 53 assists and four digs against Morgan State.
Jurnee Tipton (HOW) had 13 kills against Morgan State.
Lucia Babic (MDES) had 15 kills against Norfolk State, hitting .882, before turning in a 13-kill performance against Delaware State.
Carolina Machado (MDES) had 31 assists and nine digs against Delaware State to go along with two blocks and three service aces.
Natashia Barker (MSU) had two double-doubles: 12 kills and 15 digs against Howard and 12 kills and 14 digs against Coppin State.
Jasmin Hubbard (MSU) racked up 24 digs against Coppin State.
Mykaela Ross (MSU) had eight kills and 12 digs in a five-set upset win over Howard.
Roi Wallace (MSU) had 37 assists and 10 digs against Howard before turning in a 43-assist, nine-dig performance against Coppin State.
Christa Wilson (NCAT) had 17 digs against Florida A&M.
Hope Forsythe (NSU) had 19 kills and six digs against Hampton.
Tori Tulensru (NSU) racked up 20 digs against Hampton.
Tyran Chenault (SSU) had 15 kills and five blocks, hitting .444, in a five-set win over South Carolina State.
Amanda Rullan Vilanova (SSU) had 16 digs against South Carolina State.
