MEAC Announces Weekly Tennis Honors

Hampton sophomore Matthew Foster-Estwick was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced today, while teammate Juan Araoz earned Men’s Rookie of the Week honors. Bethune-Cookman senior Mina Matsuba was named Women’s Tennis Player of the Week.

Foster-Estwick (6-5, So., Barbados) was a combined 6-0 in singles and doubles play this past week, including a 3-0 mark in the No. 2 singles slot – with wins over Florida A&M (straight sets), Norfolk State (straight sets) and Bethune-Cookman (three sets). In doubles play, he teamed with Araoz in the No. 1 slot to go 3-0 for the week.

Araoz (Fr., Pilar Buenos Aires, Argentina) went 3-0 in both singles and doubles play last week. In singles play, he won matches in straight sets against Florida A&M, Norfolk State and Bethune-Cookman – and in doubles play, he teamed with Foster-Estwick to do unbeaten in the No. 1 doubles position. Araoz played in the No. 1 singles position throughout the week.

Matsuba (5-4, Sr., Mie, Japan) picked up a three-set singles victory over Eastern Kentucky’s Laura Argente on Tuesday, picking up the match’s deciding point in the No. 1 position with the 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win. She also defeated Hampton’s Kristina Titova to go 2-0 in singles play for the week, in addition to winning her doubles match along with Deborah Bravo against Eastern Kentucky.

Other Top Performers

Mariam Mitaishvili (HAM) picked up singles wins over Florida A&M, Norfolk State and Bethune-Cookman, while also going 4-1 for the week in doubles play.

Davide Callegari (NCCU) picked up a three-set win over The Citadel’s Willem van Zyl.

Theofanis Kontopoulos (NCCU) defeated The Citadel’s Matthew Henson in three sets and also picked up a doubles win.

Jamie Rogers (NCCU) defeated Savannah State’s Sandy Lochu 6-4, 6-0 and also picked up a doubles win.

Sandy Lochu (SSU) defeated Norfolk State’s Dajana Cvjetkovic in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, on Sunday.
