MEAC Announces Weekly Tennis Honors
North Carolina Central sophomore Gabriel Cucalon was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced today, while teammate Theofanis Kontopoulos earned Rookie of the Week honors. On the women’s side, South Carolina State senior Intissar Rassif was named Player of the Week and Hampton’s Haley Mullins was named Rookie of the Week.
Cucalon (So., Guayaquil, Ecuador) picked up a pair of straight-set victories for the Eagles in the No. 1 position this past week, defeating Morgan State’s Arjun Ramakrishnan 6-0, 6-1 and North Carolina A&T State’s Nicolas Arduh 6-0, 6-0. Cucalon, who only lost one game all week, is 5-0 against MEAC foes this season.
Kontopoulos (Fr., Corinthos, Greece) played in the No. 2 singles position and defeated Morgan State’s Jeremy Field in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, before earning a three-set win over Adair Bartra of North Carolina A&T State, 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 in helping the Eagles win both matches. He also teamed with Davide Callegari in picking up doubles wins in each match to go 4-0 for the week.
Rassif (Sr., Morocco) picked up a pair of straight-set wins in the No. 1 position this past week, including a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Bethune-Cookman’s Mina Matsuba. She also posted a 6-1, 6-4 win over Sandy Lochu of Savannah State to post a 2-0 mark in conference play for the week. She also won both of her doubles matches alongside Andjela Vasic.
Mullins (Fr., Farmington Hills, Mich.) helped the Lady Pirates pick up a 5-2 win over Howard by winning her singles match in the No. 4 position, 6-4, 6-2 over Sajela Harlow. She also teamed with Anastasiia Romanova in doubles play to take a 6-4 win over Harlow and Christina Joynes.
Other Top Performers
Peter Odegbami (HAM) defeated Howard’s Cole Gittens 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in the Pirates’ 5-2 win.
Cherise Slocombe (HAM) picked up a three-set singles win – 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 over Kindha Nasef – and a doubles win in the Lady Pirates’ victory over Howard.
Flavian Fernandez (NSU) defeated James Madison’s Theophile Lanthiez 6-7, 6-0, 1-0 (16-14).
Paula Fortuno (NSU) picked up a singles win over Rachel Nelson of James Madison, 6-4, 6-4.
Vladyslav Yanchenko (SCSU) defeated Delaware’s Colin Wong 6-3, 6-1 to help the Bulldogs pick up a non-conference win.
