Seedings Set for 2017 MEAC Tennis Championship
The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) has announced the seedings for the 2017 Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships. Morgan State claimed the Northern Division’s top seed on the men’s side, with South Carolina State earning the Southern Division’s No. 1 seed. On the women’s side, Hampton captured the Northern Division top seed, while South Carolina State notched the No. 1 slot in the Southern Division.
The 2017 MEAC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships will be held Thursday-Saturday, April 20-22, at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on the campus of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.
Morgan State’s men claimed the Northern Division’s top seed by going a perfect 4-0 in conference play this season, clinching with a 5-2 win over Norfolk State this past weekend. The Spartans (3-1) earned the division’s No. 2 seed, while Hampton (2-2) and Howard (1-3) racked up the No. 3 and 4 seeds, respectively.
In the Southern Division, South Carolina State went a perfect 4-0 in MEAC play to clinch the top seed. Florida A&M (3-1) wound up with the No. 2 seed, while North Carolina Central (2-2) and North Carolina A&T State (1-3) rounded out the Southern Division field on the men’s side.
Morgan State will take on North Carolina A&T State in quarterfinal action on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.; simultaneously, South Carolina State will take on Howard. The 4 p.m. matches on Thursday will be Florida A&M vs. Hampton and Norfolk State vs. North Carolina Central.
Hampton went 6-0 in women’s conference play to rack up the top seed in the Northern Division, while Norfolk State (4-2) picked up the No. 2 seed by virtue of a head-to-head tiebreaker over Morgan State (4-2), which will be the Northern Division’s No. 3 seed.
Howard (3-3) picked up the division’s No. 4 seed after defeating Delaware State 4-0 on Monday.
South Carolina State was 5-0 in conference play this season on the women’s side, taking the top seed heading into the Tennis Championships. Bethune-Cookman (4-1) earned the No. 2 seed out of the Southern Division, and North Carolina A&T State (3-2) and Florida A&M (2-3) picked up the No. 3 and 4 seeds, respectively.
The Lady Pirates will kick off action on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. against Florida A&M; at the same time, South Carolina State will take on Howard. Bethune-Cookman vs. Morgan State and Norfolk State vs. North Carolina A&T State will follow at 11 a.m.
Only the top four teams in each division compete in the MEAC Tennis Championships. For the men, Coppin State and Bethune-Cookman were eliminated. Delaware State, Coppin State, Maryland Eastern Shore, North Carolina Central and Savannah State were eliminated on the women’s side.
The 2017 MEAC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships will begin with women’s quarterfinal action on Thursday at 8:30 a.m., while the men’s quarterfinal matches will begin at 1:30 p.m. Semifinal action begins at 9 a.m. on Friday with the women’s matches; men’s semifinals will start at 12 p.m.
Saturday’s championship matches will kick off at 9 a.m. for the women and 12 p.m. for the men.
The championship is free and open to the public.
