SMYRNA, Del. – Maryland Eastern Shore won the 2016 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Cross Country championship title on Saturday morning after placing five runners inside the top 15 at the Delaware State University Outreach and Research Center.

The Hawks scored 38 points to edge Norfolk State (39 points) to capture its seventh overall MEAC title, the third straight. The Hawks averaged a time of 25:38.35 on the 8K course.

“Cross Country is a team sport and we did our research,” Hawks head coach Ernest Barrett said. “Norfolk State has a great team, but we have good chemistry and that is what led us today to victory.”

Maryland Eastern Shore’s Khali Rmidi Kinini set a MEAC record with his third straight championship victory and was named Outstanding Performer with a time of 24:27.88.

Coach Barrett, also of Maryland Eastern Shore, was named Outstanding Coach.

Second-place honors went to Norfolk State with 39 total points. North Carolina A&T State (84), Hampton (115) and Savannah State (145) completed the top-five team finishes.
