MEAC Announces Weekly Cross Country Honors
NORFOLK, Va., September 6, 2017—Maryland Eastern Shore sophomore John Akakeya was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week, the conference office announced today. Norfolk State sophomore Martha Bissah and Maryland Eastern Shore sophomore Sharon Jerop were named Women’s Cross Country Co-Runners of the Week.
Akakeya (So., Staten Island, N.Y.) won his debut race with the Hawks this past weekend, running a 16:59.10 on a 5K course to win the Lid-Lifter Invite. The Mississippi Valley State transfer helped Maryland Eastern Shore win the dual meet over Morgan State, with four runners finishing in the top five.
Bissah (So., Accra, Ghana) turned in the runner-up time in a field of 35 runners from Virginia, James Madison and Liberty at the University of Virginia Duals, running the 4K course in 14:20.
Jerop (So., Staten Island, N.Y.) picked up her third career victory this past weekend, taking the Lid-Lifter Invite individual crown after completing the 5K course in 20:03.00.
Other Top Performers
Anija Addison (CSU) finished sixth in the Towson Invitational, running a 20:25.99 on the 5K course.
Tatiana Ogundeko (CSU) ran 16:59.35 over 4K to place eighth in the Towson Invitational.
Karen Escobedo (MSU) finished sixth in the Towson Invitational, before turning in a runner-up finish at the Lid-Lifter Invite.
Felix Kiprotich (NSU) paced the Norfolk State men at the University of Virginia Duals, finishing the 4K course in 12:38 to finish 10th.
