Hampton Places Second at DSU Farm Run Invite
SMYRNA, Del. – The Hampton University cross country teams participated Saturday in the Delaware State University Farm Run Invite and both teams finished second in seven-team races.
For the Lady Pirates, they placed all five scoring runners inside the top ten to finish with 34 points to take second place four points behind University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Sophomore Pollyanna Velasco was once again the top finisher for Hampton covering the 5k course at the Delaware Outreach & Research Center in 19:46.7 to take third place.
The men, who ran their first meet of the 2016 season, also finished second to UMES as they amassed 67 points to the winners 16. Freshman Geoffrey McCullough finished fifth over the 8k course in 26:46.5 to lead the Pirates. Junior Stanley Davis finished tenth in 27:18.2 to round out the top ten finishers for Hampton.
Maryland Eastern Shore Dominates DSU Farm Run Invite
SMYRNA, Del.— Winning has been no stranger to the Maryland Eastern Shore cross country team this season, and this past Saturday was no exception. The men’s and women’s team swept a meet for the second time this season with their first place performances at the DSU Farm Run Invite.
Once again the Hawks were led by men’s junior Khalil Rmidi Kinini and women’s freshman Sharon Jerop, who each took home individual victories. Rmidi Kinini earned a time of 25:50.8 to win the 8k while Jerop took first with a time of 19:09.0 in the 5k.
S.C. State’s Marcanikova Wins the Will Wilson Invitational
ORANGEBURG, S.C. – South Carolina State junior Marketa Marcanikova finished first Saturday at the Will Wilson Cross Country Invitational hosted by The Citadel. The Czech Republic native covered the 5K course in 19:00.10 to grab the individual title.
The S.C. State women finished fourth (114 pts.) overall in the nine-team competition in which Wofford won (23 pts.). The Citadel was second (65 pts.).
Senior Michael Stackhouse was the top performer for SC State in the men’s competition, completing the 8K course in 29:59.10 to finish 21st. Benedict’s Dessie Demlew won the men’s individual competition with a time of 26:45.71, while Wofford captured the team title with 36 points. The Citadel was second (48 pts.), with S.C. State fifth (146 pts.).
Coward Leads NCCU at Greensboro Cross Country Invitational
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Gregory Coward led North Carolina Central University at the Greensboro Invitational, placing 25th out of 115 runners at Hagen Stone Park on Saturday, Sept. 24.
Coward, a native of Greensboro, North Carolina, finished the 8k race in 29:31.4 to place 11th.
Orane Morais and Deandre James finished 59th and 60th, respectively, with times of 33:00.4 and 33:05.9, followed closely by Phillip Hayes-Robinson at 33:24.1 in 62nd place.
The NCCU women were topped by freshman Nakai Matthews (Copiague, N.Y.), who crossed the finish line of the 5k course with a time of 25:03.1 for 61st place out of 124 runners.
Shania Nicely was the next Lady Eagle to finish, placing 69th with a time of 25:20.2, followed by Kiana Seabrook in 72nd place at 25:38.1.
