FORMBY, England – Augusta University men’s golf senior Robin Petersson and Team Europe defeated the United States, 18.5-11.5, to reclaim the Arnold Palmer Cup at Formby Golf Club. Team Europe bettered Team USA for the second straight day in singles, 5.5-4.5. The United States now leads the all-time series 10-9-1.

Robin Petersson of Landskrona, Sweden, and Charlie Danielson of Osceola, Wis., were named recipients of the Michael Carter Award which is presented to the Arnold Palmer Cup participant that best represents the qualities and ideals of sportsmanship, integrity and upholding of the game.

Antoine Rozner put Europe first on the board when he won his fourth match of the competition with a 1-up victory over Nahum Mendoza III. The match was a tight affair, with neither player holding greater than a one-hole advantage and nine holes standing at all square. Rozner took the lead for good at No. 16.

Matthias Schwab clinched the match for Europe with his 2 and 1 victory over Doug Ghim. Schwab took the lead with birdie at the third but a bogey the next hole moved the match to all square. Schwab took control of the match by winning three straight, including two straight birdies, starting at No. 8. Ghim would battle back to cut the lead to 1-down but Schwab clinched the cup with birdie at No. 17.

Eggenberger claimed Europe’s second match, 1-up, against Will Zalatoris. Eggenberger controlled much of the match. He took the lead with birdie at No. 4 and pushed his advantage to 3-up after birdie at the seventh. Zalatoris would battle back to equalize the match thru No. 12. Another Eggenberger birdie put him back in the lead thru No. 16, but a Zalatoris birdie on the next hole moved the match back to all square. Eggenberger won the hole and match with par at No. 18.

Robin Sciot-Siegrist joined fellow Frenchmen Rozner with an undefeated record when he downed Will Gordon, 1-up. Sciot-Siegrist won the first with birdie but Gordon responded by taking the next two holes. Sciot-Siegrist claimed Nos. 4 and 5, to take a lead he would not relinquish. He moved his advantage to 2-up thru Nos. 11, 12 and 16 before settling for the 1-up victory.

Adrian Meronk, Lars van Meijel and Stuart Grehan all halved their matches against Team USA.

Matthias Schwab of Rohrmoos, Austria, was selected by both teams to receive the Arnold Palmer Cup exemption into the 2017 Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard. Players selected the individual from both teams that they think best represents the “Arnold Palmer Legacy,” that is, the values that Arnold Palmer exhibited through his life in golf. Kieran Oates the Arnold Palmer Cup junior caddie for Schwab will also be on the bag at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
