MDES' Season Ends with Loss at USBC Nationals
BATON ROUGE, La. — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore opened bracket play Friday morning at the United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Championship with a 4-2 win against Wright State, but that was the last victory of a highly successful season.
The Hawks fell to Stephen F. Austin in their next match, taking their second and final loss at the USBC Championship.
Wright State put up an impressive 1,119 over six games, but The Shore countered with a 1,189 — more importantly winning 4-2 — to advance to the next round and another meeting with the Ladyjacks. The Hawks had eliminated Stephen F. Austin from last week’s NCAA Tournament in bracket play, but this time around they came up short 4-0.
Friday marked the final match in a Hawks uniform for graduate student Thashaina Seraus.
Eastern Shore will be back at the River Center to support Jacqueline Rhoda in singles competition Saturday.
Rhoda will be taking on Webber International's Taylor Bulthuis, and Wichita State's Sydney Brummett will face off against Stephen F. Austin's Stephanie Schwartz in the two semifinals.
She was the only member of the Hawks to qualify to compete in the individual championships. She did so back on March 10 when she averaged a 205.3 over six traditional games at the Sectional qualifier in Allentown, Pa.
She earned a No. 1 seed heading into bracket play this week to receive a first-round bye and won two matches to advance to the semifinals.
The semifinal and final matches will take place starting with the men's championship round at 9:45 a.m. Eastern. The women's finals will start at 4:30 p.m. Eastern. Both shows will be taped for broadcast and will air on CBS Sports Network in May.
The women's show will be televised May 2 at 8 p.m. Eastern, and the men's final will air May 9 at 8 p.m. Eastern.
