NSU Tennis Garners ITA Academic Honors
NORFOLK, Va. – Four Norfolk State tennis players were honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Thursday evening when they were named ITA Scholar-Athletes. In addition, the NSU men’s team earned the ITA All-Academic Team award thanks to its cumulative GPA.
Men’s players Antonio Pejic and Benedikt Henning and women’s players Andrea Macchiavello and Marta Gomar garnered scholar-athlete honors for having individual GPAs of 3.50 or better during the 2015-16 school year. The men’s program was honored with the academic team award for having a team GPA of 3.20 or better during the academic year as well.
It marked the fourth time in her four-year career Macchiavello was named a scholar-athlete by the ITA. Henning and Gomar, both freshmen last year, and Pejic, a sophomore, were honored for the first time in their careers.
The men’s program was named an all-academic team for the fourth year in a row. It joined Florida A&M, North Carolina Central and Hampton as the only men’s programs to earn the distinction among the 13 MEAC schools. On the women’s side, only N.C. Central and Howard had more individual honorees than NSU among conference brethren.
A player must be a varsity letterwinner and have been at their current school for at least two semesters, in addition to having an individual GPA of 3.50 or better, in order to be named a scholar-athlete.
