MEAC Announces Weekly Tennis Honors
South Carolina State senior Stanislav Baco was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week today, with Howard freshman Cole Gittens earning Rookie of the Week honors. On the women’s side, Bethune-Cookman junior Matea Roki was named Player of the Week.
Baco (6-1, Sr., Czech Republic) went 2-0 in singles play over the weekend, picking up wins against Georgia Southern and Alabama State. He defeated Alabama State’s Szabin Pusztay in straight sets, 7-6, 6-1, on Sunday after pulling off a three-set win over Georgia Southern’s Artemie Amari (6-4, 3-6, 10-5) on Saturday. Baco’s win on Sunday helped the Bulldogs to a 4-3 victory over Alabama State.
Gittens (Fr., New York, N.Y.) helped the Bison pick up a point on Saturday against the U.S. Naval Academy, teaming with Laguna Foster to win his doubles match 7-6 over Cameron Kirkpatrick and Ian Landwehr. Gittens also narrowly lost his singles match, falling 6-4, 6-4 to Joshua Martin.
Roki (5-9, Jr., Toronto, Canada) picked up singles and doubles wins against Wofford on Thursday as the Lady Wildcats defeated the Terriers 5-2. She defeated Kalli Karas in the No. 3 singles position 6-4, 6-4 before teaming with Mina Matsuba in the No. 1 doubles slot to claim a 6-2 win.

Courage Okungbowa (FAMU) defeated Wen-Po Tseng of Southern Miss, 6-4, 6-2 in No. 1 singles action on Monday.
Olivia Rolle (FAMU) won a three-set match against Wofford’s Catherine Martin in the No. 1 singles spot, going 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Angelica Martinez (NCAT) picked up a straight-set win over Presbyterian’s Caroline Ferrari (6-1, 6-4) in the No. 3 singles spot on Saturday.
