MEAC Announces Weekly Tennis Honors
Morgan State junior Jeremy Field and Bethune-Cookman senior Alvaro Barerra were named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Tennis Co-Players of the Week today, with Bethune-Cookman’s Juan Diego Ruiz earning Rookie of the Week honors. On the women’s side, North Carolina Central senior Lynsey Cover was named Player of the Week.
Field (Jr., 5-9, Seyssinet-Pariset, France) picked up a singles win this past Wednesday against Georgetown, defeating Peter Beatty in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 1 position. With the win, he improved to 2-3 in singles play on the season.
Barerra (Sr., 5-7, Madrid, Spain) defeated College of Charleston’s Rodrigo Encinas in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, in the No. 4 position, tying the school’s all-time singles victory record. He also played well in a close doubles loss, as he and Pablo Lopez fell 7-5 to Jake Kusmider and Luke Kusmider.
Ruiz (Fr., 5-10, Bucamaranga, Colombia) picked up a singles victory in the No. 6 position against College of Charleston, defeating Fernando Lascurian 6-7 (0-8), 6-3, 1-0 (10-4) on Friday.
Cover (Sr., 5-7, Nottinghamshire, England) picked up her first win of the season against East Carolina’s Maria Storozheva on Friday, defeating her 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 4 singles position.
