MEAC Announces Weekly Tennis Honors

Bethune-Cookman sophomore Jose Plazas was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Morgan State’s Ondrej Labik was named Men’s Rookie of the Week. Morgan State junior Kayla Price was named Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, while teammate Katia Jordan earned Rookie of the Week honors.

Plazas (6-0, So., Bogota, Colombia) won his singles match against Oral Roberts in the No. 2 position this past Thursday, defeating Amar Saletovic 6-4, 6-3. He also teamed with Juan Diego Ruiz in the No. 2 doubles position for a 6-3 win over Saletovic and Barnabas Koncz.

Labik (5-9, Fr., Czech Republic) defeated Campbell’s Gerard Sola 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) on Tuesday in the No. 3 singles position, and he also teamed with Nihit Rawal for a 7-5 doubles win over Lukas Schaefer and Fabien Ayet in the No. 3 position – a victory which helped the Bears secure the doubles point.

Price (5-10, Jr., Charlotte, N.C.) went 3-0 in singles play this past week, picking up straight-set wins in the No. 4 position against non-conference foes Longwood and Campbell, as well as Maryland Eastern Shore, to extend her overall winning streak to five. She teamed with Katia Jordan in the No. 1 doubles position, picking up three more victories there – including a 7-6 (9-7) nailbiter against Campbell.

Jordan (5-11, Fr., Baltimore, Md.) went a perfect 3-0 in doubles play this past week, teaming up with Price against Longwood, Campbell and Maryland Eastern Shore. She also went 2-1 in the No. 1 singles position, picking up a three-set victory against Longwood’s Marija Venta and a 6-0, 6-0 win in her MEAC opener against Maryland Eastern Shore’s Melequa King.

Other Top Performers

Mina Matsuba (B-CU) picked up singles and doubles wins this past week against both Oral Roberts and Stetson, including a 6-2, 6-0 win over ORU’s Andrea Vasiljevic.

Kristina Titova (HAM) picked up straight-set singles wins against Hofstra and Maryland Eastern Shore, while also picking up doubles wins in those two matches.

Jeremy Field (MSU) picked up a No. 1 doubles win against Campbell (6-4), while also narrowly losing his singles match in a three-set tiebreaker.
