NORFOLK, Va., April 21, 2017—South Carolina State, the top seed out of the Southern Division, will compete for its second straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) women’s tennis championship following Friday’s 4-1 semifinal win over North Carolina A&T State at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on the campus of Old Dominion University.

The Lady Bulldogs will face Hampton, the Northern Division’s top seed, which defeated Morgan State 4-1 on Friday morning.

South Carolina State started off by taking the doubles point, before taking three of the four singles matches that completed – despite Sheyla Ramirez defeating Intissar Rassif 6-4, 6-0 in the No. 1 position. The Lady Bulldogs picked up singles wins in the No. 3 (6-2, 6-1), No. 4 (6-0, 6-0) and No. 6 (6-2, 6-4) positions to clinch the match.

Andjela Vasic, Marketa Marcanikova and Smaranda Petreanu earned the singles victories for South Carolina State.

In the other semifinal match, Hampton came away with the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. Morgan State, the No. 3 seed out of the Northern Division, played tough in several of the singles matches, but the Lady Pirates got a No. 1 singles victory from Kristina Titova (6-2, 7-5) and a No. 6 win from Anastasiia Romanova (6-3, 6-4).

Titova, the MEAC Player of the Year, was also key in a 6-0 doubles victory alongside Mariam Mitaishvili.

South Carolina State is the defending MEAC champion and has won 11 of the last 12 titles. Hampton has not won the MEAC crown in women’s tennis since 2004, when the Lady Pirates completed a three-peat.

Saturday’s championship match will kick off at 9 a.m. for the women.

The championship is free and open to the public.
