WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Howard volleyball team ended the 2016 regular season with a spotless 12-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) record after sweeping Morgan State (25-11, 25-17, 25-22) on Friday night at Burr Gymnasium. 
Juniors Jessica Young and Khaila Donaldson tallied nine and eight kills, respectively. Sophomore Tamia Dockery added 17 assists to the stat sheet, while senior Morgan Marlbrough recorded a match-high 10 digs. Senior Dominique Cleggett was a force at the net with six blocks to go along with six kills. 

 

 

Florida A&M 3, North Carolina Central 0
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Senior outside hitter Kelsey Murphy posted a double-double for visiting North Carolina Central University against a victorious Florida A&M University that clinched the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division regular season title with a 3-0 win Friday night in the Al Lawson Center.
The Rattlers won their 11th straight match with the 24-14, 25-18, 25-18 triumph. Florida A&M (14-11 Overall, 9-0 MEAC) secured the top Southern Division seed for the MEAC Tournament after staying undefeated in league play, coupled with a North Carolina A&T State University loss at Bethune-Cookman University Friday. NCCU (5-15 Overall, 4-4 MEAC) will need to win its last two regular-season matches to have any chance at moving up from the fourth seed.
Murphy tallied team-high totals of 11 kills and 10 digs for her second double-double of the season.
Senior Casey Curran and sophomore Whitney White contributed six and five kills, respectively. Curran also had seven digs and two solo blocks.
Junior setter Paige Phillips logged 21 assists.
The Rattlers hit .311 for the match and was led by freshman Maria Yvette Garcia, who pounded down 16 kills on 32 attempts with just three errors for a .406 hitting percentage.
Freshman setter Elana Dimitrova conducted FAMU’s attack with 37 assists. Dimitrova added two of the Rattlers’ eight aces. Her twin sister Radka Dimitrova chipped in nine kills and eight digs.Sophomore libero Vanentina Carrasco supplied a match-high 14 digs.

 

 

Bethune-Cookman 3, North Carolina A&T State 1

SOUTH DAYTONA, Fla. --- Freshman Alana Handy had 14 kills and 16 digs, and two other Bethune-Cookman players recorded double-doubles in the Wildcats’ 3-1 (22-25,25-14,25-20,25-22) victory over North Carolina A&T in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division match at Warner Christian Academy.
In addition to Handy’s tenth double-double of the season, the Wildcats (8-20 overall, 6-3 MEAC) got 44 assists and 16 assists from Phalen Clark and 13 kills and 15 digs from Alondra Bautista as they kept alive a chance to overtake the Aggies (9-12,6-2) for the division’s second seed at the MEAC tournament Nov. 18-20 in Princess Anne, Md.
Phlyecia Armstrong had 13 kills and six blocks for B-CU, while Normarie Rolon Soto posted 15 digs.
Samara Brown had a match-high 19 kills for the Aggies.

 

 

Hampton 3, Delaware State 0
DOVER, Del. – Hampton University pulled a key sweep on Friday night taking a 3-0 win over Delaware State to keep their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament hopes alive with a 25-23, 25-9, 25-19 win.
Micah Leavell and Lena Washington recorded double-doubles with Leavell having 14 kills and 10 digs, while Washington added 11 kills and 13 digs.  Leavell only had one error in 20 total attacks for a smashing .650 hitting percentage for the night.  Hampton as a team only had nine errors in 79 attacks with 46 kills for a .468 hitting night.
Hampton travels across the tunnel to take on Norfolk State in a match that with a win will clinch a bid to the MEAC Tournament Nov. 18-20 at Princess Anne, Md. 

 

 

Maryland Eastern Shore 3, Norfolk State 1
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball won their third straight match Friday night, using a full team effort to fend off an aggressive Norfolk State attack, with the Hawks defeating the Spartans in four sets (25-19, 21-25, 25-21, 25-14) inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. The Shore improved to 16-12 (9-2 MEAC) while the Spartans fell to 6-19 (4-7 MEAC).
Senior Mere Serea was efficient on the attack and block throughout the match, ending the night with nine kills against one error over 15 attempts while participating on seven of the team’s eight blocks. Sophomore Lucia Babic led in digs with 13 while supplying eight kills with just two errors.
The premier Hawks attacker was sophomore Rachel Kayongo, who scattered 13 kills over 35 attempts while adding eight digs, a pair of block assists and an ace. Fellow sophomore Zuzana Ondruskova narrowly missed a double-double with nine kills and nine digs.
Norfolk State was led by a double-double of 12 kills and 12 digs from Jessica Johnson and a match high 17 digs from libero Melvina Brown.
