MEAC Announces Weekly Volleyball Honors
NORFOLK, Va., August 28, 2017—North Carolina A&T State senior Alyssa Pitt was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Bethune-Cookman’s Jordan Jefferson and Savannah State’s Leiri Melendez earned Co-Rookie of the Week honors, while Florida A&M junior Valentina Carrasco was named Defensive Specialist of the Week and Maryland Eastern Shore sophomore Ivana Blazevic was named Setter of the Week.
Pitt (6-1, Sr., OH, Farmville, N.C.) hit a combined .355 and recorded double-digit kills in all three matches as North Carolina A&T State went 2-1 in the ISTAP Collegiate Cup this past weekend. She hit .500 and racked up 14 kills in a season-opening win over Alabama A&M on Friday, to go along with five blocks, and she added 13 kills in a win over Grambling State to give the Aggies their first 2-0 start in 16 years. Pitt, who averaged 3.17 kills per set for the weekend, also had 11 kills and seven blocks against Alabama State.
Jefferson (5-8, Fr., OH, San Antonio, Texas) recorded double-doubles in all three matches this past weekend, hitting .179 at the Big Orange Bash hosted by Clemson. She opened the season with 15 kills and 13 digs against Clemson, before racking up 14 kills and 13 digs against Lamar and closing out the tournament with 15 kills and 17 digs against Jacksonville. For the weekend, Jefferson averaged 3.67 kills and 3.58 digs per set.
Melendez (5-5, Fr., L, Ponce, Puerto Rico) averaged 4.27 digs and 0.55 aces per set in helping Savannah State pick up a pair of wins this past weekend – the program’s best start to a season since 2014. She had 22 digs against Alabama A&M, tying the school record as Savannah State picked up its first three-set victory over a Div. I program – and she also had 20 digs and four service aces in a five-set win over Grambling State.
Carrasco (5-6, Jr., L, Lima, Peru) averaged 6.1 digs per set, totaling 104 over the course of four matches in a tournament at Ole Miss. The Preseason All-MEAC selection racked up a weekend-high 40 digs against Louisiana Tech to open the season on Friday, and she added 24 digs against North Dakota. Carrasco also had 18 digs in Sunday’s tournament finale against the host Rebels.
Blazevic (6-1, So., S, Zagreb, Croatia) averaged 11.33 assists per set in the Kristen Dickmann Invitational. She posted a career high with 54 assists in a five-set heartbreaker against tournament host Navy, and she notched her fifth career double-double (and first of the season) with a 46-assist, 11-dig, three-ace performance against Akron. Blazevic added six total blocks for the weekend, and she had 36 assists in a season-opening, three-set win over Saint Francis (Pa.).

J’Nai Higgins (B-CU) racked up 56 assists against Jacksonville to go along with 11 digs for her first double-double of the season.
Rechez Lindsay (B-CU) had 19 digs against Jacksonville after recording 10 against Lamar.
Dominique Madarang (CSU) recorded 22 assists each against Marist and Lehigh.
Glorines Rosado (CSU) had 17 digs and two aces against Marist.
Asia Stennis (CSU) had seven kills and nine digs against Lehigh.
Alliyah McBean (DSU) recorded double-digit digs in all three matches this past weekend, earning Morehead State Eagle Classic All-Tournament honors.
Nicole Abreu (FAMU) had double-doubles in all four matches, racking up a weekend-high 22 kills against North Dakota and 29 digs in the season opener against Louisiana Tech.
Candelaria Herrera (FAMU) hit .500 and racked up 13 kills against North Dakota, after notching four blocks against Louisiana Tech.
Elena Dimitrova (FAMU) recorded two 50-assist matches, totaling 56 against North Dakota after racking up 50 against Louisiana Tech.
Victoria Jenifer (HAM) was named to the Buffalo Invitational All-Tournament Team after notching five kills in her collegiate debut against Buffalo.
Tamia Dockery (HOW) had 35 assists each against Georgetown and Santa Clara, while posting eight digs in each of her three matches.
Khaila Donaldson (HOW) racked up 20 kills against Georgetown, before posting a double-double of 19 kills and 10 digs in a win over Santa Clara.
Olubnmi Okunade (HOW) had four blocks against Georgetown.
Mere Serea (MDES) totaled 19 blocks in three matches, including eight against Akron and another seven against Navy.
Iva Vujosevic (MDES) hit .304 for the weekend, notching a career-high 21 kills against Navy to go along with 10 digs.
Cristen Coryatt (MSU) recorded 12 kills and hit .290 against UNC Greensboro, while also racking up nine digs, a block and an ace.
Jasmin Hubbard (MSU) was named to the Spartan-Demon Deacon Classic All-Tournament Team after totaling 40 digs in three matches.
Roi Wallace (MSU) posted a weekend high of 30 assists against UMass Lowell.
Edie Brewer (NCAT) hit .358 for the weekend, recording nine kills each against Alabama A&M and Alabama State.
Da’Nesha Miller (NCCU) recorded a double-double (11 kills, 14 digs) in her collegiate debut against The Citadel.
Paige Phillips (NCCU) racked up 32 assists against The Citadel.
Bree Simmons (NCCU) had 20 digs each against The Citadel and Campbell.
Whitney White (NCCU) was named to the Campbell Invitational All-Tournament Team after hitting .286 for the weekend.
