MEAC Announces Weekly Volleyball Honors
NORFOLK, Va., Oct. 16, 2017—Bethune-Cookman senior Alondra Bautista was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Florida A&M’s Candelaria Herrera was named Rookie of the Week, while Bethune-Cookman senior Rechez Lindsay earned Defensive Specialist of the Week honors and Bethune-Cookman senior Phalen Clark was named Setter of the Week.
Bautista (5-10, Sr., OH, Carolina, Puerto Rico) had three double-doubles in three matches this past week, hitting a combined .303 for the week and averaging 4.1 kills and 3.8 digs per set. She opened the week with 14 kills and 14 digs in a non-conference win over North Florida, before hitting .486 against North Carolina A&T State – racking up 23 kills and 18 digs. Bautista closed out the weekend with a 12-kill, 14-dig performance against North Carolina Central. She also had six total blocks (three against North Carolina A&T State) and three service aces for the week.
Herrera (6-1, Fr., MB, San Juan, Argentina) hit .617 for the weekend, helping the Rattlers to a pair of straight-set victories in conference play. She had 12 kills (and just one error) against North Carolina Central, hitting .786 for the match and adding two service aces, before adding 13 kills, two total blocks and an ace against North Carolina A&T State. In that match, Herrera committed just three errors and hit .500.
Lindsay (5-7, Sr., DS, Diego Martin, Trinidad & Tobago) averaged 4.4 digs per set for the Wildcats this past week, including 20 in a five-set win over North Carolina A&T State in what had been a battle for first place in the MEAC Southern Division. She also had 18 digs in a straight-set win over North Carolina Central and 15 in a non-conference win over North Florida.
Clark (5-10, Sr., S, Baton Rouge, La.) had two double-doubles in three matches this past week, on top of averaging 10.8 assists per set. She racked up 50 assists and 11 digs (to go along with four kills) in a five-set win over North Carolina A&T State – after turning in a 41-assist, 18-dig performance against North Florida earlier in the week. Against North Carolina Central, Clark had 39 assists and three total blocks.
Other Top Performers
Jordan Jefferson (B-CU) had 15 kills and 12 digs against North Carolina Central.
Valeria Lopez (FAMU) had 33 assists in a straight-set win over North Carolina A&T State.
Kyndall Nicholas (HAM) had seven kills and hit .429 against Howard.
Tamia Dockery (HOW) had 29 assists against Norfolk State after racking up 28 assists, four digs, and three total blocks against Hampton.
Khaila Donaldson (HOW) hit .450 for the weekend, racking up 13 kills against Hampton and another 10 against Norfolk State.
Rachel Kayongo (MDES) had 10 kills and 14 digs against Coppin State, before adding 14 kills against Morgan State.
Natashia Barker (MSU) had 10 kills and 18 digs in a win over Delaware State.
Cristen Coryatt (MSU) racked up 21 kills against Maryland Eastern Shore, before recording 16 kills and two service aces against Delaware State.
Mykaela Ross (MSU) had 10 digs and three service aces against Delaware State.
Roi Wallace (MSU) had 46 assists, three total blocks and three service aces against Maryland Eastern Shore.
Edie Brewer (NCAT) had 25 assists and 10 digs against Bethune-Cookman.
Samara Brown (NCAT) had a double-double of 15 kills and 10 digs against Bethune-Cookman.
Jasmine Lindor (NCAT) had six kills and four total blocks against Florida A&M.
Courteney Pitt (NCAT) had 15 kills and two service aces against Bethune-Cookman.
Salma Gonzalez (SSU) had nine kills, 20 assists and seven digs in a five-set win over South Carolina State.
Amanda Rullan Vilanova (SSU) had 16 kills and hit .367 against South Carolina State.
