MEAC Announces Weekly Volleyball Honors
NORFOLK, Va., Oct. 23, 2017—Delaware State senior Sabina Szmajduch and Maryland Eastern Shore sophomore Iva Vujosevic were named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Co-Players of the Week, the conference office announced today. Bethune-Cookman’s Jordan Jefferson and North Carolina Central’s Christine Alcox were named Co-Rookies of the Week, while Maryland Eastern Shore graduate student Mere Serea earned Defensive Specialist of the Week honors and Howard junior Tamia Dockery was named Setter of the Week.
Szmajduch (5-11, Sr., OH, Rybnik, Poland) averaged 3.4 kills per set to help Delaware State go 2-1 over the past week, recording a pair of double-doubles in the process. She had 20 kills and 20 digs in a four-set win over Coppin State, before adding 14 kills and 14 digs in a four-set win over Norfolk State. In between those matches, she had a seven-kill, eight-dig, four-service ace performance against Maryland Eastern Shore.
Vujosevic (5-11, So., OH, Bar, Montenegro) hit .376 for the week in helping Maryland Eastern Shore go 3-0 – including a double-double (17 kills, 11 digs) in a straight-set win over MEAC Southern Division leader Bethune-Cookman. She also had 12 kills, nine digs, three total blocks and three service aces in a conference win over Delaware State, after an eight-kill, 11-dig performance against Hampton.
Jefferson (5-8, Fr., OH, San Antonio, Texas) had 15 kills and 12 digs against Howard to record her 11th double-double of the season, and she followed that with a 14-kill, nine-dig, two-block effort against Maryland Eastern Shore as Bethune-Cookman squared off against the top two teams in the MEAC Northern Division.
Alcox (5-8, Fr., OH, Carrboro, N.C.) recorded her first collegiate double-double in the Lady Eagles’ straight-set win over Savannah State, racking up 10 kills and 11 digs to go along with five service aces. Those five aces were a team single-match high for the season, and Alcox also hit a season-best .316 and racked up 15.5 points.
Serea (6-3, Gr., MB, Suva, Fiji) had 10 total blocks in helping the Hawks to a 3-0 mark this past week – which included conference wins over Hampton and Delaware State. She had four total blocks in each of those two matches, before adding two more in a straight-set win over Bethune-Cookman. Serea’s effort was a large part of Maryland Eastern Shore holding opponents to just .095 hitting last week.
Dockery (5-8, Jr., S, Richmond, Texas) averaged 10.4 assists per set to help Howard go 2-0 for the weekend, recording a double-double of 46 assists and 17 digs, to go along with four kills and four total blocks, in a four-set win over Bethune-Cookman. She also had 27 assists and eight digs in a straight-set win over Coppin State in conference play.
Other Top Performers
Phalen Clark (B-CU) racked up 35 assists against Howard and had a double-double of 20 assists and 12 digs against Maryland Eastern Shore.
Rechez Lindsay (B-CU) had 20 digs against Howard after a 19-dig performance at Florida Gulf Coast.
Rakaya Neely (B-CU) had 12 kills against Howard, hitting .800 to set the program’s single-match hitting percentage record.
Gabriella Enriquez (DSU) had double-doubles against Coppin State (36 assists, 18 digs) and Norfolk State (40 assists, 15 digs).
Maja Petronijevic (HAM) averaged 5.0 digs per set, racking up 18 against Norfolk State and 17 against Maryland Eastern Shore.
Lena Reed-Petracek (HAM) averaged 7.4 assists per set, including 29 against Maryland Eastern Shore.
Reeana Richardson (HAM) had 13 kills and six digs against Maryland Eastern Shore, before adding 10 kills and eight digs against Norfolk State.
Carlise Cardoza (HOW) racked up 18 digs and a pair of service aces in a four-set win over Bethune-Cookman.
Kira Porter (HOW) had 13 kills against Bethune-Cookman, before hitting .750 against Coppin State.
Ivana Blazevic (MDES) had 47 assists, four kills and two aces against Delaware State.
Jill Aquino (NSU) had 39 assists and nine digs against Delaware State.
Melvina Brown (NSU) totaled 13 digs against Delaware State and 11 against Hampton.
Taylor Eichelberger (NSU) racked up 15 kills and four digs against Delaware State.
Hope Forsythe (NSU) had 14 kills and 11 digs against Delaware State.
Tyran Chenault (SSU) had six total blocks in a loss to North Carolina Central.
Leiri Melendez (SSU) recorded 13 digs against North Carolina Central.
