MEAC Announces Weekly Baseball Honors
Florida A&M junior Aubrey McCarty and North Carolina Central senior Ellington Hopkins were selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Co-Players of the Week, the conference office announced today. Savannah State’s Turner Davis earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Norfolk State senior Devin Hemmerich was named Pitcher of the Week.
McCarty (6-4, 225, Jr., Doerun, Ga.) played a major role in Florida A&M taking the series over MEAC Southern Division rival Bethune-Cookman this past weekend. He went .385 (5-for-13) at the plate for the series, driving in three runs and scoring five times. He hit two home runs in the second game of the series – a solo shot in the sixth and the game-winner in the 11th inning. He slugged .846 for the week and had 11 total bases.
Hopkins (5-8, 185, Sr., Lansing, N.Y.) hit .500 (7-for-14) for the week and he went 4-for-4 with a home run and three runs scored in the second game of a three-game set against MEAC Southern Division rival North Carolina A&T State. He scored five runs over the course of four games and drew four walks, while also recording four putouts and 18 assists in the field with just one error.
Davis (6-0, 239, Fr., Rincon, Ga.) hit .316 (6-for-19) in five games for the Tigers this past week, scoring three runs and recording five RBIs. He had three doubles for the week, and Turner was 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs in the second game of a three-game set against Mount St. Mary’s (Md.). He drove in at least one run in each game of that weekend series.
Hemmerich (6-1, 190, Sr., Norfolk, Va.) took a no-hitter into the eighth inning against Towson on Sunday, before giving up just one hit in a complete game effort, the eighth of his career. He struck out seven batters in recording his second career shutout (first in a nine-inning game), as Norfolk State won the game 8-0.

Anthony Maldonado (B-CU) struck out four in 6.2 innings pitched against Florida A&M.
Tyler Norris (B-CU) scattered five hits in 7.0 innings pitched against Florida A&M, striking out five.
Nazier McIlwain (CSU) hit his first home run of the season against Lehigh, going 3-for-4 at the plate and scoring two runs.
Krystian Negron (CSU) struck out a season-best five hitters in 4.0 innings pitched against Lehigh.
Ryan Anderson (FAMU) struck out a career-high six batters and gave up just one earned run in the first game of a doubleheader against Bethune-Cookman.
Wesley Martin (MDES) scattered seven hits and gave up just one run against Iona.
Jamison Trower (MDES) hit .500 (7-for-14) in four games and drove in three runs in the series opener against Iona, helping the team pick up its first win of the season.
Michael Johnson (NCAT) gave up just one earned run in 8.1 innings pitched, striking out six against Mount St. Mary’s.
Jonathan Figueroa (NCCU) scattered five hits and gave up just one run, while striking out a career-high nine batters, against North Carolina A&T State.
Corey Joyce (NCCU) drove in six runs in four games, including two each against Presbyterian and in the first and third games against North Carolina A&T State.
Justin Burrell (NSU) hit .417 (5-for-12) for the week, including a 3-for-4 effort with a double and two RBIs in the first game of a doubleheader at Towson.
Jalen Atterbury (SSU) had five RBIs in a three-game sweep of Mount St. Mary’s, and he hit a combined .381 (8-for-21) in five games.
