Aggies Eliminate Hornets, to Rematch Against Spartans
SALISBURY, Md., May 19, 2017—North Carolina A&T State eliminated Delaware State with a 7-4 win in the elimination bracket of the 2017 MEAC Baseball Championship at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Friday afternoon.
The Aggies advance to another elimination game later Friday afternoon against Norfolk State to determine who will face Bethune-Cookman in Saturday's championship final.
The Hornets got on the board in the top of the fourth; after Darnell Maisonet led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a Jaylen Zielecki double, Maisonet scored on an RBI groundout from Jared Gillis to put Delaware State up 1-0.
The Aggies (28-24) answered in the bottom of the inning, tying the game at 1-1 on an RBI single from Timothy Ravare. Ravere scored later in the inning on a throwing error to give the Southern Division's No. 2 seed a 2-1 lead.
Myles Sowell then stole home on a double steal, putting the Aggies ahead 3-1.
Tyler Collins put the Hornets back on top in the sixth, lacing a double down the right field line with the bases loaded. That shot brought in all three runs, giving Delaware State (22-25) a 4-3 lead.
Sowell led off the bottom of the seventh with an infield single, then he advanced to third on an error before Greg White brought him home with a groundout to tie the game at 4-4. The Aggies then took a 5-4 lead on an Adan Ordonez RBI single.
Two insurance runs came across in the bottom of the eighth, when Martin Rivera snuck a single into right field, scoring Sowell and Greg White to give the Aggies a 7-4 lead.
Rivera, Sowell and Brandon Melendez each had two hits for the Aggies, while Rivera had two RBIs.
Cutter Dyals pitched three shutout innings of relief, striking out five to pick up his sixth win of the season.
