B-CU Headed to Gainesville Regional, Draws South Florida
Bethune-Cookman, fresh off its 2017 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) baseball championship, will compete in the Gainesville Regional of the NCAA Div. I Baseball Championship, squaring off against South Florida in the first game.
The Wildcats will take on South Florida at McKethan Stadium in the double-elimination regional on Friday at 1 p.m. Florida, the No. 3 overall seed, will face Marist in the other contest.
Each regional champion will advance to the Super Regionals, held June 9-11 or June 10-12, which will feature best-of-three series with spots into the College World Series on the line.
The No. 3 seed for Bethune-Cookman is the best regional seed in program history, and the best for a MEAC program since the NCAA Div. I Baseball Championship went to its current 64-team format in 1999. Under direction of sixth-year head coach Jason Beverlin, the Wildcats enter the tournament with a seed other than No. 4 for the first time in what is now the school's 16th time representing the MEAC in the NCAA Regionals. Twice prior to 1999, B-CU was a part of the NCAA Tournament play-in game.
In the NCAA Tournament, including six tournament play-in games, Bethune-Cookman holds an all-time record of 3-34 (2-30 in NCAA Regional games). Under Beverlin, BCU collected just the school's second NCAA Regional victory in 2014, defeating Columbia in an elimination game as part of the Coral Gables [Fla.] Regional.
