NSU's Beard Selected as CoSIDA Academic All-American
NORFOLK, Va.--One day after the Norfolk State baseball program had its first Division I All-American recognized, the Spartans achieved another program first Friday as outfielder Brian Beard was named to the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Baseball second team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Beard, a first-team CoSIDA District 3 All-Academic Team selection last month, becomes the first Spartan baseball player to be named an Academic All-American at the Division I level. Beard, who just completed his redshirt senior season, was a first-team All-MEAC selection after batting .332 with 23 runs batted in, 31 runs scored and 18 stolen bases. He tied for second in the MEAC in steals, was third with four triples and fifth with 13 doubles while helping the Spartans finish 26-22 and win their third straight MEAC Northern Division regular-season title in 2017.
Off the field, Beard earned a bachelor's degree in business management last month. He graduated with a 3.8 GPA. He was a member of the NSU Athletics Director's Honor Roll every semester he attended NSU. Beard is also a multiple-year member of the MEAC All-Academic Team and was the 2015-16 NSU Male Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Senior Devin Hemmerich was voted to the Collegiate Baseball News Division I All-America third team Thursday for his performance on the field this season, giving the Spartans two All-Americans in two days.
