Norfolk State Survives S.C. State Comeback Bid in OT

NORFOLK, Va., March 8, 2017--Despite a furious comeback from No. 7 seed South Carolina State, Norfolk State, the No. 2 seed, came away with a 93-88 overtime win at the Norfolk Scope Arena in the quarterfinals of the 2017 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament.

The Spartans (16-15) advance to Friday's semifinal, where they will face either Morgan State or Howard.

Jonathan Wade, a First Team All-MEAC selection, led four Norfolk State players in double figures with 26 points, while Zaynah Robinson added 20 points and tied Wade for the team high in rebounds with eight.

Alex Long and Kyle Williams each had 13 points.

With 9:20 remaining in regulation, Norfolk State led 69-55, but the Bulldogs closed the second half with a flourish, going on a 30-14 run to take an 85-83 lead with 37 seconds left in regulation after a Tashombe Riley layup.

But Wade hit two free throws with 23 seconds left to tie the game at send it to overtime.

The Spartans outscored the Bulldogs (11-20) 8-3 in the overtime, holding S.C. State to 9.1 percent shooting (1-for-11) in the frame.

This marked the third straight year in which these two schools met in the MEAC Tournament; last season, the Bulldogs came away victorious, but the Spartans were the victors on Wednesday night in front of a raucous Scope crowd.

Eric Eaves led the Bulldogs with 24 points, while Greg Mortimer added 21.
