NORFOLK, Va., March 4, 2017—The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) kicked off the 2017 Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament with the MEAC Youth Clinic on Saturday at the Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center.

The Youth Clinic is a community outreach program that connects children with MEAC head coaches from the league’s men’s and women’s basketball programs. The coaches and a group from the United States Marine Corps ran basic warm-up and exercise routines, as well as basketball fundamentals, with the participants.

Children in attendance learned the basics of free throw shooting, defensive stances, jump shooting, ball handling and they got an idea of what Marines do to keep in shape.

South Carolina State men’s basketball coach Murray Garvin gave the children a unique way to view free throw shooting; “BEEF,” he told them – explaining that free throw shooting was a combination of balance, eyeing the rim, holding the elbow in the right spot and executing a solid follow-through.

The event ended with children in attendance chanting for Norfolk State women’s basketball coach Larry Vickers – who is 6-foot-8 – to dunk. He obliged and converted a two-handed slam.

In addition to the Marines, Coca-Cola and R&R Productions provided gifts for participants and iHeartRadio broadcast from the site.
